Thought this was a new Advance Wars, never do that again.

We have permission to use MJEmirzian's guides, so we can probably get those up pretty quick. War Room's another matter, but from what I can tell, most players don't go too deep into that mode anyways.

I guess the real question is whether they're doing anything to the AI. I remember those guides, and they were super exploity, which was amusing. Wonder if they'd still work.

Most likely it's a 1-to-1 port of the GBA version. Plus, quite a bit of the game is designed around AI abuse. Some Advance Campaign or War Room maps can be downright impossible to beat if you can't exploit the AI.

I would be wholly unsurprised if the map editor glitch still worked too.

How does this work? Do you download games to the gamepad or does the console have to be on?

The Wii U gamepad is just a controller.

It just has a screen which the Wii U console can stream video to.

Now the real question is when you download the game, does the game only play one the gamepad screen or can you stick it up on the main TV screen for some huge Advance Wars action?

It should behave like any of the other VC consoles on the Wii U - it'll mirror the game's display on both the TV and gamepad. So you can do both!

If it's a direct port, maybe. But I wouldn't count on it if I were you. They will have probably patched some things about it in the past thirteen years.

Every Virtual Console release to date has been basically a ROM wrapped in an emulator with no changes except in a very few select circumstances (Wave Race 64 removing Kawasaki Branding, Super Mario RPG editing some flash effects to make them less seizure inducing, Ocarina of Time having the various 'religious' symbols altered).
