WWN's Advance Wars Voiced Over Edition

Post by MysteriousLad » Wed Jul 02, 2014 5:21 am

Ok, there are some plans to make a voiced over AW game for AW1 or 2. It would be great and hilarious if we could put the voice overs into the game so that when you play the campaign and there is text you hear the voice over of it.
I'm up to do this however I need to know some things to see if this will even work;

1. Is it possible to dump sound files AND make them playable in the game? (So no editing exsisting sound files, pure new soundy fun)

2. If this is possible how could you trigger the sound at the beggining of a an area of text? (Example: *Clicks A*, text appears for Lash, the voice over plays for that text, pause/stop until next text.)

3. Im probaly going to figure this out by googling or reading through old threads but how do you even dump sound into a GBA ROM?

Thats all for now, I hope this is possible.

1. Yes it is possible, there is a lot of non used music headers, though you'll want to expand the table if you have one sound for each line of dialogue

2. It shouldn't be hard, you'll want to play with the Event scripting commands in order to do that

3. You can use Sappy, but you have to know that GBA games only supports .midi files

That's here it starts to be hard, you'll want all your Voice files converted into .midi files and you'll need the right instrument table, aka the voice itself, in order to play them in the game

I'm not even sure it's possible, or, if there is some way to do it, it's out of my knowledge

I can help you for the rest but only if making voices audible in game is proven to be possible in the first place, if not I fear the whole patch will not be doable for GBA games

Ok after a quick google it looks like its possible to covert sound/audio to .midi format, but its not easy. Once people start recording for the vo and see what I can do then I will bother figuring out the rest.
Now im going to try and get voices audible :/

Its not possible to do this :(
The MIDI format only uses the notes so if I convert a sound file of a voice it would only play the notes of the pitch you spoke at. It would of been fun but AWs sound system doesn't allow it.

On a scale from 1-10 how hard would it be to make a new sound system which would be able to run voices. I would make it a let it run above the exsisting sound system letting sappy run at the same time as my voice only homebrew one, or switching to my one and disabling sappy momentarily on trigger of text popping up.
Xen would this be doable and if so where to get started?

Recoding the sound engine from scracth ? No, not at all.

You can still do researchs for NDS games though, the hardware have probably more flexibility regarding audio support.

No not recoding the whole thinf but like a new one.
Example:
Aw uses sappy sound engine until I want to run a voice or higher quality audio.
Sappy pauses and my sound engine starts and plays ...
Once finished my one switches off and sappy is once again used.

So Xen you said it would be possible but tedious as heck, how would you be able to do this?
I want to do it as I frankly at the moment have not much else to do as Ive got summer holidays and it would be funny, atleast for wwn.

Just now noticed this topic.

here's a link to the actual project, guys: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13513

This topic is for patching the games, but we still have plans to do YouTube videos at the very least.
