So... does anybody want to do the Iron Maiden redo? I could give it a shot, but I'd rather cede to somebody with more knowledge of the group than I have. I could probably do my research and post it on Saturday along with Metallica, though. Make it "Atticus Hosting Week". >_>

Also, main post needs to be updated with the "10 nominations" rule instead of "5 nominations every week" rule.

Oh.

I was gonna do that when I put up the Arcade Fire one, but that won't be streaming at least for a few days, so have at it.

I'll let you do them then, pk. I don't really know any of their material very well outside of Killers, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave.

well if you think you know them well then i'll let you do it because honestly i think they're maybe 8/10 at best, probably more 7/10, and haven't listened to them in ages. so i wouldn't call myself much of a "true fan"

I'd have both at a six. =/

I mean, it's not like I've extensively studied each discography, but I'm very familiar with the generally-regarded peak years of each, particularly Metallica's five album run.

I mean, I'm certain that someone is more knowledgeable about Metallica and Iron Maiden than I am, but I'll do it if I need to. How about this? By the time I have what I need to do the Arcade Fire topic, I will do Iron Maiden and Metallica if they haven't been done yet.

Edit: What are your thoughts on doing those two bands together? I know they're both pillars of metal that really can only be matched in importance by Black Sabbath, but there's a lack of enthusiasm that I'm seeing that would indicate that Metallica and Iron Maiden in the same topic would be justifiable.

Postby Pkdragon » Fri Jul 30, 2010 12:51 pm

metallica is ****

iron maiden is okay, they've got some melodic songs and tend to have fun subject matter and have made a lot of very decent albums.

but i really don't like metallica at all even their classic albums are meh to me. ride the lightning is *okay* but master of puppets is bleeeehhhhh

importance shmortancce i just don't like them 3/10

as far as lumping them together, i dunno, i'd like to see iron maiden get their own topic and believe it or not there ARE some metal fans here and it seems to me that tensions are already fairly high due to certain people's antagonism towards metal, so i don't want to see all the indie/rock/pop bands get their own topics while multiple metal bands get shmushed into single topics

also the last topic that smashed bands together didn't work too well, there was a bit too much in their for me to really handle and so i didn't form opinions on any of them. so yeah, i'd be against that after all

I consider Metallica's five album run to be the lesser part of their discography. The first three albums are by far the best. Also, I don't think Metallica isn't nearly as influential on metal as Sabbath or Maiden. Metallica is really part of the Big Four of thrash and all of them played a roughly equal part.

Considering the results with the Mercury Award topic, I'm going to have to reverse my stance on lumping artists. We might be able to get away with one-off solo albums or similar experiments, but I felt overwhelmed by the massive number of links at the time and didn't really go back. I found it hard enough to whittle down my picks for Metallica to nine songs (which I later added even more to), and even that's a pretty big list. I don't want to be forced to sacrifice more by adding a whole extra band's worth of material on top of that. It might not be a problem for bands with fewer albums, but long standing groups need their own topics.

By five album run I meant the ones that everyone thinks are good. Nothing after that is even close to worth it.

"Orion" had better be on your list, by the way.

I'd agree with those who said the Mercury Prize topic was a bit of a failed experiment - it probably was too big an ask to throw about 20 songs by three different bands at people in one topic and expect them to still give a damn, a problem that was compounded by the fact that the three artists in question were unknown to a majority of people on the board. It *might* work, for example, with an artist that most people will be familiar with and a related act or two, but for now I'll be sticking to one band per topic in the future.

I don't understand why people think The Black Album was a falling off point. Their compositions were less classically-inspired and less complex, but their momentum, you know, that thing that anyone gave a crumpets about in the first place, was bigger than it would ever be.

Not to mention that it cut back on their horrible, horrible pretensions.

Kill 'Em All and Metallica are both usually considered essential, too, but you're right. If you don't like 'em there, no reason to keep going. Hell, I only give 'em a six myself.

I'd probably give them 6 or 7. Maybe 8 if I feel nice. Their first few albums are incredible (Kill 'em All is probably one of my favourite albums of the 80s, actually) but after AJFA they made basically pure crap until Death Magnetic. The Black Album is boring and every song on it sounds the damn same. Load and ReLoad sounds dry and like the band are just going through the motions, without any real passion for their music. St Anger needs no comment.

That means literally about half of their entire discography I wouldn't bother with.

You could say that about a lot of great bands (The Rolling Stones, for instance). It's much more reasonable to rate the peak years.

Re: Rate The Band: Request Topic (Please Read The First Post)

Postby Atticus » Sun Aug 01, 2010 12:39 pm

It's a bit more difficult to take that tack with a band as old as the Rolling Stones. They've had 25 albums (not counted U.S. and U.K. albums with major release differences) and have been around for much longer than Metallica. While rating peak years is both easier and more generous, it's also applying a nostalgia filter that will make established bands seem much better than new ones. The Libertines might have received a better rating if they had a large discography for you to pick and choose the best from. On the other hand, it is unreasonable to expect somebody to pull something from every album in such a large pool.

Since Metallica's now on the chopping block, that frees up one of my nominations. So, in the hopes of sparking a discussion about political music and the bands that perform them...
