Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

RIP

My twitter exploded when the news broke. Nobody expected him to go so young... How ill was he at E3 and such? The cancer also was ailing him last year..

This is a serious loss for Nintendo, and for the broader industry as well. Iwata was instrumental in turning Nintendo's corporate fortunes around and in pushing for modernisation of their development and business practices.

Rest in peace.

Shigesato Itoi (creator of Earthbound) posted a farewell on his blog. Here is a rough translation:

Iwata was an incredible human. To me, the defining moment of him as just A Good Dude was in 2013 when Nintendo's stock started to plummet, and he refused to do layoffs, claiming that employees who feared for their jobs wouldn't be able to make games that people loved. From 2013-2015, we got A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World, Pokemon X/Y, Splatoon, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, and a host of other games that will go down as classics. Who knows how many of those games would have come out - or the quality they would have had - if Iwata's positive attitude hadn't been around.

What a guy. RIP.
