So, despite the great albums already out, I think Angel Olsen's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is the best thing I've heard all year. You can hear the whole album right here, kids:

Listen to the first song, at the very least. 'fudge' is a beautiful dirge that sets but doesn't dictate the tone of the rest of the album.

I've also been looking back at 2013, and I've been listening to a lot of inc. (especially after hearing this excellent song that they did with FKA Twigs). inc. are brothers who make sexy R&B in the vein of How to Dress Well. Though their album No World wouldn't be near my top ten for 2013, it's a pretty album that's good when you're in a pensive mood. Watch the video for the place and see if you like them:

Also I can't stop listening to Twin Shadow's excellent cover of my favourite Smiths' song, 'There is a Light That Never Goes Out.'

The new Cloud Nothings album is super. It's definitely better than their debut, but I'm not yet sure how it stacks up with Attack on Memory.

Another thing: How to Dress Well (who I uncannily mentioned in my last post) released a song called 'Words I Don't Remember.' It's his best song yet.

Time to do a prog dump of various things I'm liking at the moment.

Recentaly, I got into Coheed and Cambria, and it's interesting hearing the songs and the albums and then going to read the comics, the story holds up pretty well. The Afterman series of albums is probably my new favourite story conveyed through Music. Certainly love Claudio's voice and his performance in songs like 'Domino The Destitute' or 'Number City'. Certainly could do with a little more of a flair to the performances though..

&

Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree have been a mainsteady in my music habits for quite a while, due to construction of atmosphere in a lot of his/their songs. Especially songs like 'Drive Home' from The Raven That Refused To Sing (and other stories) which are bittersweet and beautiful, along with the amazing and pretty dark 'Heartattack In A Layby' from In Absentia. Wilson is probably my favourite lyricist and musician at this point. Crafts such sweet and amazing atmospheric rock pieces that I feel the need to just turn off the lights and sit with no distractions and listen to them.

&

White Willow, a band I've been listening to on and off for a year now are in the same boat for me as Steven Wilson. Such beautiful grand pieces, with a pretty incredible female vocalist peformance. A lot of use of the keys in their music for these strange and rather unique synth sounds, best heard in 'Storm Season' from, er, Storm Season. King Crimson, that classic band, been my alarm for a while with the track 'Discipline', mainly because that guitar sound is something peculiar to my ears still that it makes me wake up to hear it and it's a pretty rocking tune. Fripp, stop doing that, making unique sounds with that guitar.

&

And then, of course, Dream Theater. 'Enigma Machine' is now my favourite piece of instrumental music because it's just awesome, especially after seeing it live. Good journey, good performance, and pretty hilarious video accompanied it live.

So Banks released the excellent spacey single 'Goddess', which also happens to be the name of her upcoming album. Please let the rest of her album be as good as this song:

Also, we should discuss the new tUnE-yArDs soon, guys. It's great, and that's coming from a guy who didn't love W H O K I L L.

So Ben Khan's this one guy producing excellent early 90s-like synth pop. His EP Youth is good, and the title track is one of my favourite songs and videos of the year. It's nostalgic and forward-thinking at the same time, and though the video's plot is nonsensical, its aesthetics are beautiful and it teems with badassery. Here, watch it:

Also, Robyn and Royksopp's Do It Again EP's out. You should listen to that, too. It's excellent.

Man, it seems like besides Angel Olsen, I've been liking EPs more than full LPs this year. Hopefully How to Dress Well's new album in June will change my mind.

Do It Again was really good; listened to it on the bus yesterday.

Only one thing on my mind right now though, and it's Brill Bruisers and the title track. Never thought we'd get another New Pornographers album, and I'm absolutely thrilled it's happening.

Casualties of Cool is still my album of the year, currently. I'm starting to think it won't be topped; the more I listen to it, the more I find, and it suits so many different situations that I could probably just listen to it for the rest of my life and it would always be fitting.

So I listened to and loved Perfect Pussy's Say Yes to Love and White Lung's Deep Fantasy. I liked White Lung more because it's clearer and more aggressive, but I've yet to hear a song more uniquely moving than Perfect Pussy's Interference Fits. Other than How to Dress Well and Angel Olsen, it'd be hard for me to find albums I like more than those two from 2014.

I know Sleater-Kinney and Heavens To Betsy (anyone know their heart-wrenching song Complicated that helped soundtrack the excellent game Gone Home?), but are there other essential riot grrrl albums that I should listen to? It's a long shot on WWN but, hey, Joey's back. That guy knows everything.

RnB singer Jeremih (of Birthday Sex fame) just released an EP with producer Shlohmo called No More. It's delicious, and best of all, it's a free download (which is rare and amazing because torrents don't exist or anything).

Check out Bo Peep (Do U Right) and see if this is your thing.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'hipster music.' If by hipster music you mean recently released music that I and others genuinely enjoy and want to share with those who show interest, then yes, this is all very hipster.

Yeah, RTJ2 displaced every other album and stole the top spot on my 2014 list. Every song in there is fantastic, but I have to give special mentions to 'All Due Respect' and 'Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1'.

Oh, and 'Love Again' is fun as fudge - Gangsta Boo's verse gives the album a very welcome female presence.

RTJ2 is easy top 10, and the second half of this year has I think taken over most of my list save Transgender Dysphoria Blues and Casualties of Cool, which remain at #2 and #1 respectively. The new TSwift is great, Azealia Banks' debut is great, the new TV on the Radio is great, FlyLo is great just gughughughhh it's a good time

Edit: OH AND GODDAMN BRILL BRUISERS I'M GOING TO SEE THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS NEXT WEEK AND AGGHUGHHGHHHH

I haven't listened to TVOR yet, and I don't really get FlyLo beyond the beautiful Kendrick Lamar collab, but yeah, TSwift is good and Azealia Banks' debut was excellent.

If I'm thinking about a top ten (without having heard Charli XCX's upcoming Sucker, which is sure to be great), it'll probably look something like this:

1. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2
2. How to Dress Well - "What Is This Heart?"
3. FKA Twigs - LP1
4. Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste
5. White Lung - Deep Fantasy
6. The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream
7. The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace Is There
8. Perfect Pussy - Say Yes to Love
9. Spoon - They Want My Soul
10. Arca - Xen

I'll write more on why I like these albums later.

Also, I have no idea how into FKA Twigs you kids are, but did anyone see her breathtaking performance of 'Two Weeks' on Jimmy Fallon?

Her vocals were breathy, the mix was too quiet, and replacing 'fudge' with 'mother uh-uh' didn't do her favours. But like wow, the silk suspended by the fans made for one of the most beautiful, otherworldly things that I've seen in any live performance. And the way the silk seems to mimic her movements at the song's close - that woman is magic.

Once you've seen that, to get a better idea of just how good 'Two Weeks' is sonically, watch the official video. Like every FKA Twigs video, you'll be treated to visual splendour, too.
