Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Post by Atticus » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:44 am

Basically a companion topic to all the other "what [media] are you [engaging in] now?" topics. You don't have to write small novels about what you saw, but a little commentary would be nice.

I just watched Throw Down Your Heart the other day, and I was absolutely stunned. The wide variety of music that Fleck found in just four parts of Africa is amazing, and I'm seriously looking forward to the album that comes out of it. For the unaware, Bela Fleck (an awesome banjo player with Grammy nominations in more categories than any other musician) decided to take the banjo back to its African roots and recorded several songs with local musicians. Most of the music is traditional African music than Bela's banjo playing quietly and effectively slips into, but he also wrote a couple of songs that are also amazing. I'm particularly inspired by his ability to communicate with non-English speakers solely through playing music. It's a great documentary.

The Fighter, Bale definitely deserved his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and it's a good film even if you don't like Boxing.

Gran Torino: Clint Eastwood points guns at people and tells them get off his lawn. Superb.

Red Dawn: Great movie. A true classic. Show to your children to instill a proper fear of Russians coming to eat them at night.

The Isle: A mute woman kills people in a bizarre Korean movie involving hookers, fishermen and sadistic and disgusting scenes. Interesting but animal lovers should not watch this. I'm not sure if anyone should

Summer Wars: japanese cartoon about virtual worlds and AI's and how asians save the world by solving thousand digit prime numbers in their head. Kind of cyberpunk except not really. Liked it

Black Swan: Natalie jerks off. not worth all the hype but decent

Isn't that line of reasoning a bit strange? I think Blood Diamond was a good movie, and I don't like diamonds, slavery, contraband, or civil war. I liked Field of Dreams in spite of not liking Baseball, and I enjoy court room dramas without being into law and stuff. Don't get me wrong, I think I know exactly what you mean and why you said it that way. This is just the first thing that went through my mind.

Yeah I know, it's just some people will and probably have looked at it and gone 'It's a Boxing film, I don't like Boxing films/Sport films etc.' I'm guilty of doing that.

"Paul" was a funny film. Rubbish plot, but the humour is brilliant. If you liked "Hot Fuzz", you will like this film. I would post some quotes, but dragonite (the WWN user) might moan at me! :P

Yeah, I do that, too. I just realized, I never read reviews of a movie before deciding wether I'll see it or not. Strange if you consider I do so with almos every other medium.

Incendies, 127 Hours, and Rango.

Three very good movies, Incendies especially, which might go on my top 10. Such a gripping, screwed up film, but so very well done.

Was forced to watch Disney's Tangled. Was not as horrible as expected. Without Disney's nauseating dogma of trying to make every and each of their movies into a musical I might have even enjoyed it.

The drawings during the end credits were the highlight. They should have done the entire movie in the same style.

I just realized I haven't posted the the last good movie I saw yet. It was Adaption. I really like the "meta" approach in any medium, as I think that often the proces of creation is more interesting than the created piece itself.

honestly i need to watch more miyazaki

i've only watched nausicaa and spirited away. actually have my neighbor totoro sitting here and need to watch it at some point. princess mononoke i watched the first 30 minutes of but didn't like, so maybe i'll watch it again some other time and give it more of a chance.

but yeah needless to say i too had a ghibli-less childhood

I think that we all need to watch The Brave Little Toaster right now.
That would make everything better.

I recently watched Withnail and I It was a pretty good film, actually, and Richard E. Grant's big break.

Just a warning, though. A lot of wine is drank in that film. You'll probably want some. Well, need some. Like, more than a bottle would be necessary.

Great film, though.

Personally I found Dinner for Schmucks to have little redeeming quality whatsoever. It's another one of those comedies that doesn't really have any jokes, or even observational humor, it's just relying on "Look at this guy! Isn't he awkward? Ha ha! The socially inept are funny!"

Sucker Punch pretty much delivers what the trailers promised, but I believe there's two alternate ways in which it could have been better. Either it could have tried harder to be a genuinely good movie (it would have needed a better script for that) or it could have tried harder to be unapologetically porny trash (it would have needed an "R" rating for that). Now it's kind of halfway there, and I can't help feeling there was a load of missed potential. Still, it's got hot chicks, dragons, giant chaingun wielding samurai, robots, AND steampunk nazi zombies in the same movie so you kinda have to give it some points for that. Thumbs up.

To be honest the twist sort of caught me by surprise. And it is one of the few movies where I actually found a futuristic setting believable.

Plus I love these futuristic what if settings.
