I seem to remember reading somewhere that Garfield figured out how to act as Spider-Man by studying trolls. Same general idea: give someone like Peter Parker anonymity and some power, and how do you think he would act?

With all the hype I heard about it, mostly from my friends, I was expecting an awesome film. Then I remembered that my tastes are very different from my friend's tastes. What I was presented with was your standard SFX tech demo (hello Avatar) with cheap humour at the end. The plot was there, but only there to justify the onslaught of overblown action scenes. Acting was acceptable, I suppose. If was 12 years old and had ADHD I may have enjoyed it.

The more I watch Casino Royale, the more I'm sure it's my favourite Bond film. The script's clever, the art direction is beautiful, and Le Chiffre's a delicious, sophisticated villain. Oh, and Eva Green:

She's like the best Bond girl. And I didn't realize she was French. She's beautiful and exotic.

So yeah, finally saw The Dark Knight Rises and I really enjoyed it. It tried to fit way too much in, but I still feel it got more things right than it did wrong, and it actually had some ideas in it, which was nice.

(psst Treed, Skyfall is going to be excellent)

I don't know, I found Casino Royale to become rather boring on the seconding watching through.

But I never get tired of the opening credits sequence

Somehow the rest of the movie just fails to have the same mojo.

I quite enjoyed Casino Royale, but I hated the cinematography for the fight scenes in Quantum of Solace, so I'm not quite sure what to expect from Skyfall. But I'll probably see it, at least, which is more than I can say for a lot of new films.

Also the Rifftrax for Casino Royale is pretty funny.

I finally saw Project X.

Anyone else see it? I've never watched a movie with more detestable main characters. Did the writers want me to hope that all three kids would be melted into sidewalk stains during the flamethrower scene? And the ending: the way that Thomas casually mentions that he'll be in debt and trouble for the rest of his life while he woos the next-door-cutie with all the charm of a smug, screechy parrot who can't feel the gravity of the words he's pronouncing. My. God.

I'm spoiling the film, but I don't really give a fudge in this case. Call me a cranky old Treed, but I've never seen a film that was less life-affirming and more hopeless about the future than Project X.

I don't mean hopeless about the future in the vacuous sense that I've lost hope in the next generation of kids that assumedly do this crumpets. I mean hopeless in the sense that Project X advocates fudge bitches (no fat chicks; no homos) then burning everything to the fudge ground because tomorrow will probably blow. It's as though the film's telling me that those moments of debauchery will be all that men have to reminisce about as we gradually age, lose our ability to have sex and party, and then die. As though the debt Thomas accumulates in that single night is an 'investment' to create a worthy memory, to have one less regret in a crumpets of a life. What a gross idea.

I liked Superbad because it had a heart, and I liked the Hangover because it was clever. But Project X was dumb and people who like it are also dumb. I do think I read way too far into it, though.

Saw "Wreck It Ralph" last night. Was a cute story with a good message and an obvious appeal to gamers. There was a few good one liners (granted, I really enjoy lame puns). The thing that I think I enjoyed the most was the really subtle gamer jokes.

Spoiler: show
"Aerith Lives" was graffiti'd on a wall. I think I was the only person that laughed out loud in the theater. Did not expect that one.

Seen Donnie Darko yesterday. It was enjoyable, despite a few things.

Spoiler: show
I wasn't really content with the whole silly Stephen Hawking time travel idea. The awful physics interpretation I couldn't quite accept, so that took out a lot of the immersion. Furthermore, what should have been scary moments where Frank commanded him to do evil things were a real letdown (he makes him flood the school and burn an empty house, whoop-dee-doo). And lastly, the tragic moments didn't feel all that tragic thanks to kind of a poor way of filming it, I guess.

What I DID like was some of the deliberately over-the-top acting that made for a few hilarious moments, but I guess that also kind of makes the movie have two faces: a psychological thriller on one hand and sort of a black comedy on the other.

Watched The Usual Suspects last week! I did a good job of avoiding spoilers until then, so it was great.

Then I went into twist ending mood. So I started looking into other ones... but Identity was completely awful. Oh god what the hell man

Other movies I have seen, but not necessarily worth mentions: Men In Black 3, Brave, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

EDIT: Holy Motors is AMAZING. Saw it in theaters in London, and it is unlike anything I have seen. Definitely worth a watch.

I saw Looper a few weeks ago. The time travel aspect was ok, there were some pretty cool scenes involving it. The intro and the ending are definitely the best scenes though. The impact of those two scenes is perfect.

I dug it. Good action, interesting setting, the leads were both very fun to watch.

Since I live in a dorm full of RTVF majors, I've been watching stuff like crazy lately: Argo (very nice film), Birdemic (perfect if you like bad movies, painful if you don't, but I do), Poltergeist (good, but some pacing issues with big monologues), Kill Bill Vol. 1 (it is what it is, pleasantly over-the-top), Slumdog Millionaire (it's nice to see it now that both the hype and the backlash have died down), and V for Vendetta (fun but I'm amazed that people are still making such a big deal out of it).
