Splatoon Topic (we should totally organise some WWN games)

Post by Terragent » Mon Sep 28, 2015 1:54 pm

So, we've had some talk of it here and there, but it's been scattered. No longer!

Who's playing Splatoon these days? I still really love the game - it's become my go-to multiplayer option given I no longer have a gaming PC. I know several other WWNers have mentioned playing it, so maybe we can organise some private matches together! If anyone wants to put their NNID/in-game name up here I'd be happy to maintain a list of WWNers who want to ink together!

Beyond organising games, I think it'd also be nice to have somewhere for people to hang out and talk about their favourite gear and strategies!

These days I mostly play Ranked. Turf War has gotten a bit stale for me compared to the more objective-based modes, and Ranked has the added bonus of being able to squad with friends. The Blaster is far and away my favourite weapon (disruptors! One-hit splats! Airbursts!), but I frequently use the .96 Gal and occasionally pull out the Splat Roller, .52 Gal Deco, and Forge Splattershot Pro.

I mostly just play the odd Turf War game (I'm almost always too exhausted to aim properly/play reliably or react in a reasonable timeframe to enemy action to actually be useful in the ranked modes these days), but I'm still willing to pull up for a game. I mostly run with the Dual Squelcher, Heavy Splatling or LUNA Blaster.

Also note that you can show your NNID in your forum profiles, but I imagine it'd be helpful to copy it to this topic anyway.

Tis. Much more approachable than most team shooters nowadays.

Sign me up for occasional Splats

Do we want to Skype as well? I think it would be more fun with Chit Chat; I've found silent multiplayer to be less engrossing lately (although playing Destiny with randos has reminded me of the joy of just using dumb emotes)

Pardon my long delay at doing this. I would love to play some Splatoon with the wonderful folks here at WWN as well :)

Please do point out if you're from WWN if you send me a request!

Mii: Tingly

During the work week, I play mostly later at night during the Pacific timezone, so around 9pm pacific to 12am or 1am pacific. On weekends, I can play at almost any time, but I usually watch other folks in another Splatoon community who stream or are playing in tournaments :P

I primarily use the Custom Jet Squelcher, thanks to its long range and incredible flexibility for nearly any situation. The damage output can be frustrating sometimes, but I can make up for it with good aim, good spacing and/or Burst Bombs. I do tend to change up weapons depending on the match type or map. Flounder Heights, which is my favorite map in the game, is probably one of the worst maps for CJS. If FH is in the ranked rotation, I tend to switch to either the Sploosh-O-Matic or Custom Dual Squelcher if I feel like I'm not helping enough.

I prefer using non-scoped chargers over scoped chargers for the wider viewing angle. I know that the scoped chargers have longer range and have an easier time hitting distant targets, but I prefer not getting ambushed instead. The Kelp Charger is my favorite charger and the charger that I use most often.

Some of the other weapons that I want to get good with are L3 Nozzlenose D, Rapid Blaster Deco, Rapid Blaster Pro, Sloshing Machine and Mini Splatling. Depending on the maps for Splatfest, I might switch between the Rapid Blaster Deco, Splash-O-Matic or Nzap 89.

Anyone tried the Zink Mini Splatling yet? I haven't even tried it for over a day, and I already like it enough to go squadding with it.

Imo it's the best support loadout, maybe beaten out by Bamboozler Mk II. Unlike other support loadouts, Zink Mini doesn't suffer from being overly dependent on how good your teammates are and can stand on its own. Good range and good move speed for strong combat presence (unlike Tri Slosher or Custom Splattershot Jr). Bubbler isn't as timing constrained as Echolocator and can be used on yourself in a pinch.

Right now I'm going with a build that gets me lots of run speed up, but I want to try a special charge up stacked build in the future. You can ser the build here:

I wasn't too impressed with the standard Mini Splatling, but I may have to give it a shot.

I've never had much success with any of the splatlings - they require a bit too much commitment for my taste, and in the case of the mini in particular it just feels like I'd be better off with a regular shooter in the .96 gal/dual squelcher/splattershot pro range bracket. I'm also not really impressed by a bubbler on a long range weapon, though it's at least not as ridiculous as it is on the Inkbrush Nouveau which goes too far the other way.

Disruptors are a two-edged sword: on one hand they're great at ruining somebody's day and are absolutely invaluable in Rainmaker where slowing down a specific player can be incredibly valuable - on the other hand, their effectiveness hinges hugely on how much ink your target has in the tank when they're hit (if they're full when they get disrupted then they'll barely be affected if they're shooting instead of running away) and whether you have support from teammates who can force your target to try and run or hide instead of just shooting you (because if they were going to shoot you then you'd have been better off shooting them instead of disrupting).

The one situation where they're unambiguously great is for messing up rollers and brushes, who can't really handle the slowdown (or in the case of dynamo rollers don't care about the slowdown but are so ink-hungry that they get screwed over by the recovery penalty).

The other obvious problem with the disruptor is that it's usually given to primary weapons that are either fairly specialised (blaster, bamboozler, tri-slosher) or kind of weak (custom splattershot jr). The only all-round weapon that has them is the L3, which has a pretty unforgiving learning curve.

We are currently away and won't be back to send/accept friend requests on our WiiUs until the new year.

On another note, today we visited the Nintendo World Centre hoping to check out the Splatoon art display. But it had sadly finished and has been replaced with a Mario Maker display. I think we probably should have spent a little longer checking that out but since I was disappointed about no Splatoon we didn't stick around.
