Week 4, Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment's "Sunday Candy": 6.0

Are we a lost generation of our people?
Add us to equations, but they'll never make us equal.
She who writes the movie owns the script and the sequel,
So why ain't the stealing of my rights made illegal?
They keep us underground working hard for the greedy,
But when it's time to pay they turn around and call us needy.
My crown too heavy like the Queen Nefertiti.
Give me back my pyramid, I'm tryna free Kansas City.
Mixing masterminds like your name Bernie Grundman.
Well, Imma keep leading like a young Harriet Tubman.
You can take my wings, but I'm still gon' fly.
And even when you edit me, the booty don't lie.
Yeah, Imma keep singing, Imma keep writing songs.
I'm tired of Marvin asking me what's going on.
March to the streets, 'cause I'm willing and I'm able.
Categorize me, I defy every label.
And while you're selling dope, we gon' keep selling hope.
We rising up now, you gotta deal, you gotta cope.
Will you be electric sheep?
Electric ladies, will you sleep?
Or will you preach?

Feel free to PM me one song suggestion per week (I'll probably refine the suggestion format in the coming weeks). Next week is something more rock-oriented.

Something about it feels forced and contrived, manufactured even, and it's still a bit too, shall I say, mainstream for my tastes, but overall I liked it.

I don't think she's the best singer but I enjoyed the bassline and rhythm.

6/10

55 seconds in: "Pretty cool bassline, Joey I'm impressed."
Vocals start: "Urm okay that's a shame."
2 minutes in: "My ears hurt." *goes back to Blizzard by Kavinsky*

2/10 (But 7/10 if you remove the vocals)

Basically this. Too much pop fluff but otherwise the song is perfectly fine. Even her vocals fit the song nicely. Sure she isn't the best vocalist but one does not have to be if you can make a song (or get someone to make a song for you) that fits your vocals well enough it is fine.

Note that I'm a bit 'spoiled' if it comes to bad vocalists. I had a classmate who absolutely loved to sing... one problem; even the f*cking crows dispersed when that guy ripped his f*cking mouth open, it was just that excruciatingly bad. If you have never heard him sing, you are simply unable to imagine that singing that bad is actually physically possible.

I rated it a 7/10, though - rating it a six merely because I don't like pop fluff is a bit unfair (was torn between a 6 and a 7) and I actually liked Cold War, which pulled the rating to a seven.
My sig is a void.

Pretty decent song, mostly like the instruments, but it didn't really catch me. Should base my ratings on what I really feel, and be consistent about it, so I went with 6.

This song is a solid 6. It's not something I'd seek out by myself or consider buying (which, imo, would be worth a 7 or higher), but definitely not unpleasant.

Been wondering about about the ratings.

Joey, how do you define a ''10''? I notice you've been rating your own entries as a 10 so far. Is it a overall likable song enough for you to get that grade? A few of us probably feel like a ten is a rare masterpiece sort of grade that should not be overused, so it's possible we're seeing different standards of grading missed together. Likewise, going below six could either mean various degrees of thrash,or just only start giving above average grades if they really start liking a song. How do you feel about that?

mine:

10 - legendary masterpiece
9 - brilliant, buying tickets asap
8 - great, buy one or several albums
7 - worth checking out at some point
6 - not unpleasant
5 - average everyday music, nothing noteworthy
4 - not my cup of tea
3 - turning this off if I can help it
2 - nails on a chalkboard
1 - auricular waterboarding
0 - my ears are bleeding

90% of pop music would probably rate between 4 and 6

10- if it's flawed it's flawed in all the right ways
9- really good
7-8- i like it
6- decent but somewhat uninspiring
5- nothing wrong but nothing exciting, "average", average is a death sentence in an oversaturated industry tho
4- bad
1-3 -various levels of crumpets

will rate the song later i finally listened to Marillion's Misplaced Childhood and help me i can't stop

Tens for me means, more or less, that they are likely to make my Pazz & Jop ballot, which is ten songs per year.

The cynic in me says that he's 90% sure the song will be almost universally disliked, so he rates it a 10 to get the average up. That way the elaborate troll that is this series looks slightly more credible.

10 - Masterpiece in every way. Nine Inch Nails, early Sabbath, 1994-2003 KoRn, 1996-2003 Marilyn Manson, Pink Floyd, later Electric Wizard
9 - Wonderful and will likely never leave my playlist
8 - Solid with nothing majorly bad about it
7 - Cool tune bro
6 - Wouldn't turn off the radio
5 - Wouldn't complain about it in someone's car. Average.
4 - Yawn
3 - Turn it off.
2 - No seriously, turn it the fudge off.
1 - brokencyde
0 - friday friday gotta get down on friday

I see. I roughly agree with HPD's scaling, so I can be stingy in peace.

Curious if this means you have a 10+ personal rating though. The truly perfect ought to be rare to make it significant, but that's just my approach.

Oh, and the legend of brokencyde lives on, also thought about it, I might defy High Purger Dear and rate it april 1st or something..

2/10: strong distaste
4/10: not a fan
6/10: it's fine
8/10: enjoyable
10/10: loved it

i don't do odd numbers because a 10 point scale is bloated

I listened to Cold War. 5/10. Formulaic song structure with little creativity, but catchy and sorta enjoyable to a point.

That's a big boost over QUEEN. (And I believe the best rating I've given a song you've shown us in this series so far, Joey. Too bad it wasn't "official")

I think I rate almost everything between 5-9. Less than 5 and I'm finding it difficult to listen to (and I'll let the people I'm listening to the music with know). Stuff I feel is between 9-10 is the stuff I actively search out when I'm looking to listen to music. That's really it.

I can only imagine very few songs that I would rate a ten... like, count them on one hand.

10: A true masterpiece.
9: Great! Certainly worth to buy the album it is on!
8: Very nice. Might buy, but I'd at least consider it.
7: I might look the song up once or twice, or listen to it repeatedly or at least of my own accord.
4-6: Various degrees of average
0-3: Various degrees of bad
My sig is a void.

ok i'm going to go with a 6 but i get the feeling if i were to listen to it more i'd probably warm up to it.

i did like cold war a bit more though, on the initial listen. my big worry would be that it's so very melodic that it might get old quickly, while queen i am sure has some staying power.
