Song contest 2

Post by HPD » Mon Jun 13, 2016 6:44 pm

Number one was a great success!

For this one, I'm not going to bother with Google forms. Just PM me your song link. Picture and commentary is optional. Not bothering with the whole countries thing either.

Again, I'm not going to say who submitted what. I'll just be posting them once we have all the submissions.

One per person, etc etc.

While we're on the subject of music, why did no one tell me Pillar released a new album last year? 15 year old bogman would have jizzed everywhere.

PS It's alright. Nostalgic af.
PPS No I didn't submit Pillar despite the temptation to troll you all.

Ok, didn't get to this on Monday, but here we are finally!

THE PLAYLIST: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... l0FiqRyVjv

Can't embed it but that's ok. The link should work. Tell me if it isn't.

Here are the entrants:

Tiga - Love Don't Dance Here Anymore
The Hold Steady - Hornets! Hornets!
Volbeat - The Devil's Bleeding Crown
WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA/水曜日のカンパネラ - シャクシャイン
Youssou N'Dour - Li ma weesu
Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot
Novos Baianos - Brasil pandeiro
HOME - Resonance
The Living Tombstone - Dog of Wisdom Remix BLUE feat. Joe Gran
Marilyn Manson - Third Day of a Seven Day Binge

Remember to place them in ranked order from highest ranked to lowest. You can rate your own songs, I don't really care. The point is to have fun and listen to cool music you may or may not have heard of before.

So yeah, have fun!!

4. Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot - I like this
5. The Living Tombstone - Dog of Wisdom Remix BLUE feat. Joe Gran - dog tier
6. Volbeat - The Devil's Bleeding Crown - surprisingly okay for this sort of thing
7. Youssou N'Dour - Li ma weesu - reminds me of civ 4 main menu theme
8. Novos Baianos - Brasil pandeiro - hue hue brasileiro
9. WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA/????????? - ??????? - this has to be monkymeet's entry
10. The Hold Steady - Hornets! Hornets! - only one I didn't finish

Overall this crop was better than the last. Maybe because this time everyone didn't treat it as a joke

heh i just try to choose some stuff people probably won't come across usually

marilyn manson - hot
wednesday campenella - haha its my song. also the lyrics are pretty nonsensical. she just states tourist attractions in hokkaido
Novos Baianos - relaxing and fun
Youssou N'dour - i really like this actually
home - chill but i think didn't quite like it as much the second time
Volbeat: it's so hilariously cheesy but i still find myself enjoying it
The Hold Steady - ok if a little boring
Tiga - I think it overstays its welcome in many parts, but it's okay i guess. It's like, 6 minutes too long.
Letters to Cleo - i've personally moved past 90s alt
the living tombstone - me no likey

edit: some minor adjustments after relistens

Well here we go.

1. Novos Baianos - Brasil pandeiro - it's smooth and quite playful. A very nice find!
2. Youssou N'Dour - Li ma weesu - my pick, for what it's worth. Beautiful and uplifting.
3. Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot - nothing really special but it's competently-executed pop with a pleasingly arranged chorus.
4. WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA/水曜日のカンパネラ - シャクシャイン - weird in a fun way, with some neat harmonies here and there.
5. Volbeat - The Devil's Bleeding Crown - Full of energy! It's fairly paint-by-numbers but still fairly fun.
6. HOME - Resonance - some neat 80s electronic sounds sadly ruined by a godawful modern percussion track.
7. The Hold Steady - Hornets! Hornets! - it has a rocking feel to it, but spoken-word music needs to be really nailed to hold my interest and it's not quite there.
8. Marilyn Manson - Third Day of a Seven Day Binge - decent riff but there's not much variety and the whole lot has a really flat sound to it.
9. The Living Tombstone - Dog of Wisdom Remix BLUE feat. Joe Gran - it's clunky and there's no variety of dynamics or texture.
10. Tiga - Love Don't Dance Here Anymore - actually a few things to like about it ; very subdued and competently put together but it's bland and it badly overstays its welcome, so last place for you.

hornets hornets is just a song that has endured the test of time for me, it hasn't gotten dull with repeated listens like a lot of rock does

i probably should have done something off of their later albums, which are a bit more polished, but i decided to just go with my personal favorite song and see how things go

i'll take a very consistent 7th place.

(i was this close to going nick cave instead but that would have just been boring, WWN is already familiar with nick cave)

enjoying the tracks so far, i don't listen to a lot of music that isn't prog, metal, or rock. as usual, not quite *getting* the electronica, but im liking HOME more than the electronica piece from the last group of songs.

1. Novos Baianos - Brasil pandeiro - my pick. I listened thinking for every song "do I like this better than Brasil Pandeiro?" Couldn't say yes once.
2. The Hold Steady - Hornets! Hornets! - Funky and good!
3. Volbeat - The Devil's Bleeding Crown - pretty good!
4. Youssou N'Dour - Li ma weesu - Relaxing. Likeable
5. The Living Tombstone - Dog of Wisdom Remix BLUE feat. Joe Gran - Better than I would have expected. Good rhythm!
6. WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA/水曜日のカンパネラ - シャクシャイン - Weird and fun
7. Marilyn Manson - Third Day of a Seven Day Binge - decent
8. Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot - Annoyed me a bit
9. HOME - Resonance - irritating.
10. Tiga - Love Don't Dance Here Anymore - couldn't finish, didn't like

discovery: humming (barking?) dog of wisdom while listening to tiga makes both songs ten times better

WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA/水曜日のカンパネラ - シャクシャイン- my weeb is showing but hey its a fun song
Youssou N'Dour - Li ma weesu- it's pretty
[The Hold Steady - Hornets! Hornets!]- my pick obv
Volbeat - The Devil's Bleeding Crown- isn't this a pokemon?
Novos Baianos - Brasil pandeiro
Tiga - Love Don't Dance Here Anymore
The Living Tombstone - Dog of Wisdom Remix BLUE feat. Joe Gran- gets bonus point for dog
HOME - Resonance
Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot- I'm basically ok with this until the chorus.
Marilyn Manson - Third Day of a Seven Day Binge- never been a manson fan, sorry

but yeah good crop of songs, honestly the middle 5 from volbeat to HOME are all fairly arbitrary in their placement

Never been a Manson fan either

But as often is with famous artists, I'm surprised to find out their music isn't actually that bad when I finally give them a listen after all these decades

I was almost as much positively surprised as I was in the last year to find out that Elton John makes actually pretty good music too. Always thought he was famous just because he was a gaydude or smth

I didn't really like any of the songs, and by that I mean that there was no song that grabbed me enough for me to finish listening to it and that I'm not interested in listening to any of these songs again. (I liked the songs from the first contest though.)

That said, the one I would probably rank highest is Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot. It starts great, but then at the 16 second mark the vocals hit. And from that point it just drags on.

I might still try ranking them later.

I'm in the same boat as Kireato. I didn't really like any of them. My top three were mostly a popularity contest, and I liked Cleo the best because it seemed like a good intro song to a sitcom, and I like sitcom songs.

I purposely picked a track from one of the albums that tends to surprise people who associate Manson with this.
