Song contest 5

Post by daisy » Tue Sep 20, 2016 4:18 am

Yeah yeah. PM me your songs with a YouTube link, song title and artist. I'll make a playlist on 24th September unless it needs extending.

Go.

That's a oddly specific list considering we are talking about a large island with unique culture and music style, and several big media industries which are bound to have produced something of merit.

Apologies for the slight delay. I was too intoxicated last night.

The playlist is HERE. There are 10 entries in total, which are:

Tiga - Luxury
Brain Power - Noma
Beyond the Time – TM Network
Space Lion – The Seatbelts
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - The Essential Mingus Big Band
Weidorje - Vilna
Heavenly Star – Genki Rockets
No Good - Kaleo
Roundabout - Yes (Just cos it's in a crumpets anime doesn't make it Jpop.)
Sulo - Kimmo Pohjonen

I have also punished you all. If you did not submit Jpop, my apologies.

1. Tiga - Luxury

2. No Good - Kaleo

3. Weidorje - Vilna
In terms of music, the 70's may be the only thing cooler than the 80's

4. Roundabout - Yes
Pretty sure I've heard this before

5. Space Lion – The Seatbelts
Kind of giving me a Vangelis vibe. It's also got something to do with space? Approve.

6. Sulo - Kimmo Pohjonen

7. Brain Power - Noma

This isn't bad as far as electronic music goes but it doesn't really do anything too surprising

8. Beyond the Time – TM Network

9. Heavenly Star – Genki Rockets

10. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - The Essential Mingus Big Band

since dragonite said he likes it when people give their opinions i suppose i'll start doing that

1. Space Lion – The Seatbelts: i very much adore this song
2. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - The Essential Mingus Big Band: i quite like jazz. didn't know about this band, thanks whoever
3. No Good - Kaleo: kinda sounds like this was made for commercial use. easy to listen to but kinda empty
4. Heavenly Star – Genki Rockets: pretty cute
5. Weidorje - Vilna: feels like it'd be more fun to listen to while on a scooter or something than me just sitting here. it's nice
6. Roundabout - Yes: kinda fun. didn't like the vocals very much
7. Tiga - Luxury: nice to listen to but rather repetative
8. Brain Power - Noma: i like a lot of electronic music (mostly electroswing, love ya monky) but this was not my jam. i don't this kind of drum-focused stuff i think where it's just beatbeatbeatbeatbeat the whole time. i find it annoying

Beyond the Time – TM Network: i could not listen to it in my country unfortunately

Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - The Essential Mingus Big Band - Great composition, great interpretation, great food for the soul.
No Good - Kaleo - Quite liked it! Fun rock.
Roundabout - Yes (Just cos it's in a crumpets anime doesn't make it Jpop.) - A classic!
Brain Power - Noma - I don't know why but this was listenable. Made me want to dance.
Beyond the Time – TM Network - Harmless.
Space Lion – The Seatbelts - Sax transitions into Lion King (?)
Tiga - Luxury - Meh.
Sulo - Kimmo Pohjonen - Terr?
Heavenly Star – Genki Rockets - Skipped it halfway through. Not my jam.
Weidorje - Vilna - Twelve fudge minutes of this. Seriously you guys. Seriously. If it was cut around the 3 or 4 minute mark I might've even enjoyed it. Jesus.

Welp here we are.

sulo - my submission, yes. Still beautiful.
goodbye pork pie hat - very smooth,
no good - welp it's definitely electric blues.
weidorje - I find it weird that Linky had so little time for this, because it's easily the most jazzy track after his own submission. I enjoyed it.
heavenly star - I'll confess that I'm completely unable to separate this from No More Heroes. Still pretty fun, even if the sound mix is a bit too loud.
roundabout - It's prog, all right - but while it has some cool riffs, the instrumentation is all over the place and there's no real momentum; the song feels flat as a result.
space lion - not my favourite part of the cowboy bebop soundtrack - it doesn't help that it's from one of the worst episodes, either. Give me Blue or something instead. :/
beyond the time - not available in this country. Yes, it is going above the next two.
luxury - bland. very bland.
brain power - unimaginative rhythm and irritating editing. Not my thing.

It's not jpop. I don't understand what makes it jpop. Or does any song that's used by Japanese media automatically become jpop in weeaboo land?

Yes themselves would be insulted.

Pop rock. Just because the Japanese used western music in yet another pretentious cartoon doesn't make the western music jpop. Jpop didn't even freaking exist when Roundabout was written.

"Modern J-pop has its roots in traditional Japanese music, but significantly in 1960s pop and rock music, such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys, which led to Japanese rock bands such as Happy End fusing rock with Japanese music in the early 1970s.[1] J-pop was further defined by new wave groups in the late 1970s, particularly electronic synthpop band Yellow Magic Orchestra and pop rock band Southern All Stars.[2] Eventually, J-pop replaced kayōkyoku ("Lyric Singing Music", a term for Japanese pop music from the 1920s to the 1980s) in the Japanese music scene.[3] The term was coined by the Japanese media to distinguish Japanese music from foreign music, and now refers to most Japanese popular music."
-wikipedia

Music doesn't retroactively change genres, although I suppose you could place bands like Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More in the nu-metal genre. (But frankly I find the idea that Yes is a jpop band insulting on their behalf)

(Expect my ratings tomorrow. Teaser: Heavenly Star is absolutely shocking.)
