Hi Everyone, I just finished an expansion to the original Handicap force ranks mod that I did a while back

I present, the new and improved Advance Wars: Dual Strike Super Force Ranks hack.

Requires a USA 1.0 AWDS, and the patch is in XDelta format (You can find a patcher on Romhacking.net or whever). As usual, tell me if there's any crashes or unexpected behaviour.

What it includes:
-An expanded list of equippable skills, including skills that apply handicaps
-Auto-unlock so that all COs and skills are available to use immediately
-A random skill select function that will pick from the pool of skills
-Bug Fix so that Sonja doesn't get her terrain star reductions when CO Powers are off

Skills can be equipped as per normal on the same menus, but a second menu and list can be accessed by pressing Y instead of X on the menu. Some values have been changed from AWDS standard, as well. The touch-pad input will re-open the last menu of the two that you used.

As an unfortunate aside, this currently doesn't work on the DS hardware with an R4(Wood). I'll have to update when I figure out a better method of getting it to work.

Wow. I haven't tested it yet but Empowerer seems to make for broken combos.

I'll post more when I can, I just gotta test that.

EDIT: I wonder if we could change the values, though? I could have some mighty broken fun with that. (Don't bother, dl'd the source code and found it there.)

EDIT2: It just doesn't seem to work for me. The patched ROM refuses to play. Gah, I wanted to see that Empowerer - Teamwork - Synergy - Bodyguard combo...

So, basically, Sami with both capture skills and Empowerer could cap in a single turn with full HP units.

You've thought about this one too, eh?

First thing I came up with was Sandstorm Max with Empowerer, desert lord, sand scorpion and star power. With of course Andy as his partner with Empowerer and all teammate skills. It can (and will) stomp mega-cashers like Hachi with sales skills, sasha's coin and empowerer if they doesn't have the same support teammate.

Does the AI actually get confused when you use the "hide info from enemy" skill? Or is it just to put it on the AI so that you might have a greater challenge against, say, someone like Max?

Also, on a random note, if nobody's said anything about it yet, the descriptions for Pathfinder and Prairie Dog are switched in the game.

Nah. It's for Human vs Human or giving to the AI to make your life harder. The AI knows precisely the HP of every unit it is aware of, down to the decimal level.
Also, on a random note, if nobody's said anything about it yet, the descriptions for Pathfinder and Prairie Dog are switched in the game.

I've seen my brother play and this is crazy.

I can't wait to play my Adder/Koal team, both with Star Power, Speed Demon and Empowerer. I'm unsure about which 4th skill to pick for Adder. My Koal's obviously gonna keep Road Rage, but so far my best choice is to make Adder my builder and give him Fire Sale, or perhaps should I give him Espionage. Would give him some sort of power that would complement Koal's road stuff.

It's great that you've done this, though I wonder how you did do that. Would it change if I happened to modify CO abilities? Like, if I modified Koal's base +10% attack on roads to +20%, would it change that skill too?

Also, it would be broken if you could pick the same skill more than once. Three Empowerers would be weird (or useless), triple Speed Demon + Empowerer would break the speed limit, and of course there's the Kanbei with Empowerer, True Grit, Slam Shield and Snipe Shield. Who cares about powers? 160% defense means you're invincible on your HQ, so you essentially have to be routed to lose.

Props to you, Xen, for this game-breakingly fun patch. :)

Mercifully, A CO's skills and the equipped skills are completely independent. You could change Koal's Road attack willy nilly and Road Rage would still be +10%.

Sure, the effect of all the Force ranks is defined in the source code - you can build a copy yourself with whatever values you want.

As for the CO data, you'll have to dig through my notes document in Syogun Change.

Can you make a pirate rank?
So that every time you kill a unit it has a 5% chance of spawning the same unit (allied to you) with 3 health.

I tried this mod with my friends for a while, we had fun, but we noticed a few... "bugs"
In the skill menu when you press the "X" icon wich removes the equipped skills, the game freezes. An unit when standing on roads will gain an extra firepower with or without the Road Rage skill.
Olaf gains +20 firepower during snow. With the skill that adds +20 firepower during snow and the Empowerer it goes to a total of +60, but the CO menu shows that he has +100< firepower boost on all units.
I hope that I didn't bother you with these informations

Hm, that's odd.

Did you use the US version or the EU version as a base? Because if you used the EU version, the game will not behave sensibly.

I used the US version, but maybe the problem is my patcher program. I used a rom patcher for android.

i'm trying to build the file with the build app in the source code but it has two error lines saying
arm9main.asm(3) fatal error: File awdsfiles/fsi.ct/arm9.bin not found
and
overlayconcatenate.asm(6) fatal error: File awdsfiles/fsi.ct/overlay9_0004.bin not found

Did you unpack the AWDS Rom? Because it's meant to work on the filesystem, not the final built rom.

Yeah.

I'm pretty sure I used CrystalTile2 to unpack the AWDS ROM when I was writing this. Unpack the filesystem from -> Run the ARMIPS compile -> Rebuild the ROM from Filesystem

New Version! That totally actually works on real hardware!

There is currently one bug that I don't quite know what's being caused by, but I put it in the readme:
May sometimes hard lock when moving the cursor to the far right of the skills selector on hardware.
So uh, just be careful with that.

I've tested it and it runs on my Original Ye Olde R4 DS:



But! I don't know what the compatibility is like on other hardware/flashcards. If anyone can test/report bugs back here that would be fantastic.

I do, but I want to clean it up a bit for public consumption because the compile process is ridiculous. It currently takes a decompiled AWDS filesystem as input and then compiles it to an already built AWDS ROM. The readme should tell you the compile process and folder arrangement you need to get it to work.

If you wanna give it a whirl, it is here anyway.

Thanks for your romhack.
But the game crashes on my SuperCard DSonei when I move a unit next to an ennemy (the command box is supposed to appear). I crashes everytime also when when moving the cursor to the far right AND LEFT of the skills selector.
Aside of that: if I'm available for a french translation, would you make a patch for the euro version?

Awesome, I think that narrows down the possible bugs that I know about. I should be able to fix that when I get some free time.

Er, maybe!

There's been some interest relatively recently from a few people for foreign language versions of my hacks. In theory it shouldn't be too difficult for me to port over my work to the EU versions, but it would probably require me to rejig a huge lot of things.

This hack is a lot smaller so I could probably do it though.
