I know a guy who has a geology degree, but doesn't plan on actually doing anything with it. He might know of some work around here, though. I live in North Carolina (USA) if that's of interest. I know he did some work out in New Mexico as well.

Everything that's not Spain is of interest for this thing. It's an overseas scholarship.

Geology work? That could involve oil fields, shiny rocks, and rich things, no? Have you thought about Canada, specifically the province Alberta's Athabasca Oil Sands? Alberta's unemployment rate is hilariously low and the pay for oil sands employees is mind-boggingly high, even for unskilled or barely educated grunts.

With your skills, I'm sure you could squeeze into a high-paying position or apprenticeship. The oil sands are ugly as fudge, but the rest of Canada is beautiful. Plus, we're a first world country that actually welcomes educated immigrants and values people that speak other languages (especially if you're willing to learn French, too). I know you only want a three month job, but I think it'd be an ideal place for a Spanish geology major to build up contacts for long-term employment. Once you're finished your degree, you could escape Spain and come back to Canada thanks to your new Canadian contacts, working on citizenship or a long-term work visa.

Get in contact with the Spanish branches of whatever oil companies are in Alberta. See if they'll give you an interview and agree to send you overseas.

I briefly searched for geology related jobs in Finland but I couldn't easily find anything even though I had heard somewhere that the mining industry was supposedly growing or something but if they had any jobs available I guess they've already been taken by Russians or they were just swept under a rug somewhere. Though then I realised you wouldn't be able to apply anyway because you don't know a word of the crumpets insane, impossible to learn language. In addition Finland is a freezingly cold, dreary and funless socialist hellhole with bald racist muggers at every corner, all Spanish people are considered criminals and everyone is drunk all the time. You wouldn't want to come here anyway. Go to Canada or Sweden instead.

They need people like you over in Norway. Last time I was there, I got the impression I could pretty much start right away in Bergen and I'm not even a geologist. Plus, Bergen is a beautiful city, marred only by the fact that it rains there 362/365 days a year.

I remember that you mentioned that once, and Norway has been on my list ever since. I'm very thankful to you guys, and Treedles I'll be sure to keep that on sight. I'm applying for two different and non-exclusive scholarships, one October to December and the other to be started sometime before May 2013. Norway then Canada might be the best way to organize them, but I'll have to think about that.

I have to say I totally hate French, but it was really easy for me to learn back in high school so I can learn it again I guess. I'm not one to close myself any doors. I see there are many companies mining Athabasca, I'll probably aim for Shell since it also has a presence here and it's one of the world's majors (and I mean like, second).

I also thank you Narts for you effort. My brother was thinking over the possibility of moving to Finland some day, I'll have your input taken into account.

I guess I'll keep you guys updated. Many thanks once again, you guys are bosses.

You don't have to learn it, Kanz dear. It just gives you extra points on your citizenship tests.

Funny to see how many of the things I had been planning have gone to hell in the last many months. Anyway, I'm back from whatever hole I crawled down into and I guess I would say hello here instead of making a new topic.

I'll try to keep coming by regularly again. I hope everything is going fine for you guys. I already checked up on Dave's thread and crumpets was nice to read, smiles are hard to come by sometimes but seing someone work so fudge hard and actually accomplish stuff reminds me of good ol' days. We gotta keep up.

I finished all my remaining lessons, but still couldn't finish the end project. Working on it. It all went downhill when scholarships started to get cancelled and the light at the end of the tunnel vanished further still again. At this point, my motivation to go on is virtually zero, yet I know I can get it done by pure inertia. I'm not sad, I'm not angry, just not happy. Some of you might know what it's like. It pretty much sucks, but you just don't give a fudge.

I feel stuck in many aspects of my life. Luckily, I still manage to keep developing my social life, meeting new people, and people still seem to find me quite likeable. I think I have internalized my empathy so much that I act like I care when I think I should even if I actually dont' care at all. It's not like I don't want to be nice to my friends, but I sometimes feels like I'm lying to them, as if acting that way kept them outside of my actual feelings (or lack thereof). Most of the time I don't mind, though, I prefer to have them happy than worried when they cannot help me. Frustration and worry would do no good for any of us.

I spent lots of time wearing a mask and sometimes I still do, but I wonder if your worries about your friends are true. Yes, they would be worried (if they don't get worried then they aren't your friends) but simply knowing that someone cares is one heck of a boost. I would encourage you to open up to them. You've managed to be honest about how you feel to us, so why can't you be honest to your irl friends?

I pretty much believe that all empathy is a result of cultural indoctrination.

Well, to be cliched sciency about it, it seems to a mix from being natural and having a decent and loving upbringing to develop it further. And of course group thinking, which can vary a lot. There is a lot to cynical about in humanity, but all empathy being indoctrination doesn't make any sense to me.

Aztecs had a twisted sacrifice religion, but they did have empathy. Romans had very primitive practices, but in other aspects they were a relatively advanced culture(and influenced by Greece) I'm reminded of the Pompei human remains, which depict some desperate protection attempts if I remember correctly. Evil forms of empathy also exist I might add, as it's the ability to recognize emotions, which can be exploited. Sacrifice might be some very warped offshoot of empathic observation which resulted in twisted gods and horrid practices. Actually, if you look at it like that, you didn't use the proper term, maybe compassion is what you mean. If humans can be bastards every now and then, yes, I wouldn't dispute this, but.. Your exact claim is problematic because it's so very broad and radical.

PS yes, this is getting off topic, and I'm having free time at school. Sorry Kanzer, although he may find it a interesting discussion. If this drags on it can be spit or something.

They know, but time goes on and people forget. I don't want to be a constant reminder that something remains unsolved. I want smiles around me, not worried frowns. THAT is one heck of a boost. I already know they care! They are great friends.

Anyway empathy is not something unique to humans. It's shared by all animals who develop social ties. It's mostly THE way they develop social ties at all.

But yeah I don't wanna go there.

So yeah I got an orbitomalar microfracture this saturday and I'll be having surgery on it wednesday morning. I have an appointment tomorrow with the anaesthetics specialists and I'll be internalized in the afternoon to sleep in the hospital and be under the knife first hour in the morning. I should be back home in a day, maybe even the very same day. I hope the will be no complications. They just have to move the malar bone back where it was and luckily the orbital won't even be affected. It can't even be seen in plain sight if not for the red eye.

Aaaaand back. Everything went just fine, although the bone was a bit more messed up than it looked (it actually took a 5 screw plaque and a 3 screw one to put it together) the orbital was fine and they didn't have to mess with the eye. So I'm back home again and everything, although I can't eat most solid food for a while, which totally sucks.

Hello friendos. It's been far too long this time.

Know that things got kinda better in my life, in general, and specially health-wise. I'm not an unhappy person and I rock a bitchin' suit to an awesome job. I remember you guys quite a lot, actually, and have been thinking about coming back to say hi every now and then. So, well, hi. How have you been?

I could say many things but most of the regulars might be new by now. I guess ask me anything?

I'm gonna try and log on a few times a week at least for a time. This is one of the few forums I ever posted in and knew everybody in, so I'm actually interested in hearing of your whereabouts =)

I hope it's just the good ol' spanish brand hawkes.

Thanks for the greetings, it's great to be back actually. I've been looking around and I'm glad to see that the Happy Things topic is still keeping on par with the Angst topic. The balance must not be broken.

I'm working on bank stuff, and starting a new project. Its very awesome because it pays well and I get to work with friends, but it's pretty exigent. Never been afraid to work my ass off though, and I get to use my sharp social skills rather often to kick old smugs in the face whenever they underestimate us (we're rather young for this business). I am the only one in the team that has no studies or preparation for the job they're in, so I have to make up for that in extra awesome and group-building. You might remember I studied geology. I got in on this because the boss (a close friend of mine for like 9 years) needed someone of his absolute personal trust and I'm literally the only one. You can pay for people with talent and studies, but you can't buy trust.

Maybe I will post some pics one of these days!

Also, good to see you're back deoxy, I've missed you a lot. Last time I came to check in, you were rather absent and I've been worried =(

On other things, yeah you guys can totally add me on facebook if you want, just PM me and ask. It's the easiest way to see if I'm still alive and so. Also add me on Steam or League of Legends if you want, I also play a couple other MOBAs less regularly. If anyone wants those, again, just ask.

Also, did I miss anything good aside from a bazillion Mafia games?
