WWN Presents: Advance Wars With Voice Acting! (Alpha Stage)

Post by AzureTranquility » Sun Jun 29, 2014 7:41 pm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALPHA STAGE: We are scouting for the best VAs for each character. Once we finalize the VAs, we can move on to the beta, where we will begin YouTube dubbing and
possibly game-patching. For now, only expect the former.

:os: :andyds: Andy - Overly Cheerful and optimistic. (Current Candidate: None)
:os: :maxds: Max - Tough guy voice, but let's not just do the Rocky/Arnold Schwartzneggar impersonation. He's a chowhound. (Current Candidate: kiltman2)
:os: :samids: Sami - Always sounds like she's listening to orders, even when she's not. She likes chocolate and goes gaga over Eagle. (Current Candidate: None)
:os: :nellds: Nell - One of the older female characters, so a deeper woman's voice might be needed, or a voice that sounds like the announcer from Dual Strike. (Current Candidate: Treedweller)
:os: :jake: Jake - Sound the bro alarms my gangstas and surfers! (Current Candidate: Blame Game)
:os: :rachel: Rachel - Upbeat and peppy, but still have a small tone of serious. Might be funny to have her flip-flop between the two constantly. (Current Candidate: None)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:bm: :olafds: Olaf - Blue Moon is russian, so a deep russian accent should work here. That or Santa. Russian Santa? (Current Candidate: None)
:bm: :gritds: Grit - Originally from Orange Star, so a southern drawl is expected to match his cowboy theme, pardner. (Current Candidate: AzureTranquility?)
:bm: :colinds: Colin - He's a young boy that always tries to act like a proper soldier. It's adorable! (Current Candidate: AzureTranquility?)
:bm: :sasha: Sasha - Prim and proper, because she's descended from royalty don't you know. (Current Candidate: None)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:yc: :kanbeids: Kanbei - Badass japanese samurai mixed with the concerned father. (Current Candidate: None)
:yc: :sonjads: Sonja - Similar to Sasha, but maybe not as fancy. She gathers intel, so she needs to sound overly observant, I guess. (Current Candidate: None)
:yc: :senseids: Sensei - Old dude voice. Think Master Roshi from DBZ or Uncle from Jackie Chan Adventures. ONE MORE THING! (Current Candidate: None)
:yc: :grimm: Grimm - Old japanese dude's voice. He also has to have that uncle-y tone. (Current Candidate: kiltman2)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:ge: :eagleds: Eagle - Comedic, but not too comedic because Eagle is a serious character. Not quite as serious as Hawke, but not as lighthearted as Andy. (Current Candidate: Linkman)
:ge: :drakeds: Drake - Used to be a pirate. Yar, shiver me timbers! (Current Candidate: Blame Game)
:ge: :jessds: Jess - Somewhere between Nell and Sami's voices. With a slight german accent, because Green Earth is based on Germany. (Current Candidate: Treedweller)
:ge: :javier: Javier - HAS to be a french, spanish, or some made-up accent. We have to be very picky with this guy! He's ripe for ham, fresh from Jess' homeland. (Current Candidate: Treedweller/Linkman)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:bh: :sturm: Sturm - I expect lots of voice filters. Farting in a trumpet might actually work, too. (Current Candidate: hawkesnightmare)
:bh: :flakds: Flak - Listen to kiltman's impression. I can't really describe it in words... oh wait yes I can. HE'S SECRETLY SHREK. DONKAY! (Current Candidate: kiltman2)
:bh: :lashds: Lash - She's about Sonja's age I think. "Lash must be an early teen who is very hyper. Voice similar to Ruby from RoosterTeeth's RWBY series." (Current Candidate: None)
:bh: :adderds: Adder - Two ways: Gothic Vampire, or British Cockneyed(Like Yangus from DQ8). (Current Candidate: kiltman2)
:bh: :hawkeds: Hawke - The epitome of "So serious it's overdone". This guy never really made jokes, his humor is much more subtle. (Current Candidate: kiltman2)
:bh: :jugger: Jugger - Like Sturm, we may be using voice filters. (Current Candidate: hawkesnightmare)
:bh: :koal: Koal - Like every rat from every Disney movie ever made. (Current Candidate: None)
:bh: :kindle: Kindle - Screw it, let's go the drag queen route. (Current Candidate: Treedweller)
:bh: :vonbolt: Von Bolt - Old guy who wheezes a'lot. (Current Candidate: hawkesnightmare)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:os: Soldier - Same voice as Andy or Max.
:bm: Soldier - Same voice as Olaf, maybe not as deep/loud.
:yc: Soldier - Somewhere between Kanbei and Sensei.
:ge: Soldier - Same voice as Eagle, maybe a little deeper.
:bh: Soldier - Like an alien.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:os: Hachi - He doesn't have lines in the campaign, as far as I know. But I'm still open to hearing people try him on for size. It'll probaly just end up sounding like Sensei, though. If we ever manage to patch the games, we would need to insert voice clips for his merchant status, as well as his in-battle quotes for war room usage. So whether we voice him or not is highly dependent on the patching situation. Right now, we're not sure if it's even going to happen(So far it's looking like a no).

The Ranks;

:s: = Spot-on, nearly perfect performance. There may not be anyone better suited.
:a: = Pretty good. There might be better candidates, but it was still a really good performance that shouldn't be overlooked.
:b: = Average, nothing extra. That, or it's a dude voicing a female character with a still-decent performance, such as good line delivery. As Treed proved though, it IS possible to do a good female performance despite being a dude. Seriously, that guy is magic. Kiltman got a B for his Sami performance because of his line delivery alone... IT MUST BE SOME SORT OF AN INSTALLATION.
:c: = Being the lowest rank in the games, this implies a performance that probaly won't be seeing the final project in any light. Is it bad? Maybe not, but it might not be project-suitable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VA SAMPLES;

EDITOR'S NOTE: Try to have plenty of empty spacing between lines, as it makes editing a BREEZE. Oh, and make your soundcloud samples downloadable. Thanks!

Sort-of. The process involves recording lines, then playing the lines over the in-game dialog, preferably with the in-game audio still intact. Since the game doesn't have voice acting in any sort of way, it shouldn't be intrusive.

Same dealio if you want to plug in your own music. Just shut the music off and you can place another music track over it when editing it in your favorite video editor.

As far as actually hacking the game to have voice acting? That wasen't what I was implying, but if a patch like that could be made, I think it'd be awesome too. Kill two birds in one stone. Or as Grit might say, kill two infantry with one artillery unit.

Ok a patch like that would be doable I imagine but would take a hell of work.

Not to mention that voice acting is a lot harder than it sounds. I don't think that a bunch of amateurs like us are going to do a good job.

That said, I'd totally be up for doing it just for the sheer hilarity.

Uh...

Jesus, who could I play?

Andy - Dragonite
Sonja - Ale
Javier - Kanzer of course
Sensei - Nembras (get it he's old)
Flak - Xen
Adder - Fal
Drake - Kilty

...actually maybe Kilty can do everyone.

Oh I know I can do Grimm! I'm totally fat and lovable.

It might be best if we each audition for our "favorite" characters, as well as a few extras maybe. I get the feeling with a little practice I could nail Grit, since I have an accursed southern accent.

Honestly, I think the VA can stand to be a little cheesy. I mean, if you've ever played Mega Man 8 or Mega Man X4, those games had hammy voice acting.

My intention was originally to do VA for Dual Strike, and upload that on my YouTube Channel, since the gameplay footage is mine(As of this post I'm only up to Mission 22 out of 28 though). Maybe we only wanna do VA for the "Mandatory" missions. But the mention of a patch has me excited with glee! It could breath new life into this awesome game.

Only certain characters show up in the campaign. Unless we want this patch/project to extend to every little detail as well.

The characters that show up in the campaign are;

*Orange Star Soldier
*Blue Moon Soldier
*Yellow Comet Soldier
*Green Earth Soldier
Nell (She's older, so we may want to have a lower pitch woman's voice, if possible)
Jake (Gotta have that gangsta accent, yo)
Rachel (Gotta sound upbeat and peppy)
Jugger (I think any dude could pull this off. Even better if you use a voice filter. The guy that does Jugger could do the Black Hole Soldiers as well)
Max (Believe it or not, I think we should stray from the obvious Rocky/Arnold Schwartzneggar impersonation. Just a simple tough guy voice should be fine)
Lash (Teen Girl voice. Whoever does Rachel could probaly just lower the pitch a tad.)
Colin (He's a young kid, so we may actually have to employ female help for this one. That should be interesting)
Sasha (Gotta sound prim and proper. She's descended from royalty don't you know!)
Koal (Young kid like Colin. Maybe make it sound more jerkish)
Kindle (I think something like Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers would be PERFECT)
Sensei (Old guy voice)
Grimm (Same as above, but maybe a lower pitch)
Jess (Somewhere between Nell and Rachel's voices should be fine here)
Javier (I so want him to have a french or spanish accent. That would be awesome)
Hawke (This could go so many ways)
Von Bolt (Old guy who wheezes all the time)
Sami (Rachel's voice should be fine here)
Grit (Southern cowboy, ya'll)
Sonja (Probaly around the same as Sasha, maybe not as fancy)
Eagle (Like the typical anime male voice. That should be fine here)
*Andy (Same as Eagle)
*Olaf (Not as old as Sensei/Grimm but not as youthful as Andy/Eagle)
*Kanbei (Badass, but concerned father. This shouldn't be hard to pull off)
*Drake (He used to be a pirate, so maybe the typical sailor accent with a touch of pirate should be fine)

That account all of the playable COs except Hachi, Adder, and Flak. Characters with a * may have limited voice acting. The Black Hole clones of Andy, Olaf, Kanbei and Drake don't talk much. We could just have one guy voice all of the allied nation soldiers. etc

Also, for lulz, here is my attempt at voicing every character in Mission 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea7ZUwQeSHM

Hence why I REALLY wanted to shift gears and just make this a collaborate project.

I always thought that Hawke would basically be Walton Simons. Flak and Lash would be messing around with death rays or bombs or AW1 APCs or something and he'd show up and be all "JESUS CHRIST DENTON".

I'm okay with this.

If you guys are willing to do the other two Advance Wars games, I'm in. There aren't as many characters in those campaigns(Especially the AW1 campaign), so it shouldn't be as difficult. I even have gameplay of the first two games prepared. The only problem is that I may be speeding through the text a bit too quickly.

So I guess we should get started actually doing voices. Guess I'mm post my gameplay videos, and maybe you guys can record your lines over the gameplay... though YouTube can lag sometimes so I dunno if that's ideal. Worse comes to worse, e-mail me at AzureTranquility95@aim.com and I'll send you the raw files.

Here's the Advance Wars Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... ebEMbz-903

The first two games are complete, Dual Strike is only up to Mission 22(Don't spoil in the comments of my videos that there's more, though). For funsies, I also have the first nine missions of Days Of Ruin.

I call Grit, Jugger, Olaf, Hawke and Max for me to attempt at voicing. You can record your own versions as well, and we'll probaly do a poll.

As for the title of this project, I think "Wars World Presents: Advance Wars Voice Acted" or something along those lines would be nice. (Produced by AzureTranquility, kekekeke)

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

[In this mission, you can freely select which of the three main OS COs you want
to deploy. I'll be using Sami on this one.]

<CO Select> : At last! The enemy stronghold! Can we win back our country?

---

Flak : They've come at last... I'll win it all with this factory.

??? : You look like you're having a rough time, Flak.

Flak : Huh? What rock did you crawl out from under, Adder?

Adder : Heh heh heh... I wanted to see the military strength of this world
myself.

Flak : Should you be here? I thought you were supposed to be invading
Yellow Comet?

Adder : Leave off, Flak. You'd do well not to waste your energy on my
affairs. Look! The natives are knocking on your doorstep... and they
look restless.

Flak : Grrr... I won't lose.

Adder : "Won't"? Heh heh heh... You mustn't lose, Flak. That's closer to the
truth.

Flak : .........

Adder : I'm looking forward to your performance. Heh heh heh...

---

Andy : Whoa! What in the world is that?!?

Sami : It seems to be some sort of an installation. What are they planning
now?

*Kilty laughs at his own crumpets voice*

Nell : I believe they call it a factory. This is the center of all the
damage inflicted upon our forces.

Max : So there's no doubt that it's the key to the entire Black Hole
invasion!

Nell : Yes, but... There's still so much we don't know. I've got a spy on
the inside, so I'll let you know if I hear anything. In the
meanwhile, let's launch some sorties and see the enemy's response.

Sami : Yes, ma'am! Urrrrggghhaaaa

Mission 24 - The Hunt's End
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Adder : They... They've come this far? That must mean...

Hawke : Adder...

Adder : Who's there? Who dares address me?!? Oh! Hawke! It's you.

Hawke : It appears that you're behind schedule. What've you been doing?

Adder : I-I've been delayed. But only slightly. It's no problem. We'll be in
control of this tiny country soon. You have my word.

Hawke : Do you understand what it means that I am here, Adder?

Adder : If-If I win... If I win here, there's no problem! That's correct,
isn't it?

Hawke : Hmmm... IF you win.

WHAT IF DRAKE WAS A SCOTTISH PANTOMIME DAME, EAGLE GERMAN AND JESS REDONKADONK POSH

Drake : It looks as though Yellow Comet and Blue Moon have given the foe
the old heave-ho, Eagle.

Eagle : That just leaves Green Earth.

Drake : Over half of our country is under enemy control, though.

Eagle : Yes. And it's high time we took it back, Drake.

??? : Are we launching a counteroffensive? Perhaps I can lend a hand.

Drake : Jess, you're back!

Jess : Yes, I am. I couldn't continue my training abroad with my homeland
in danger.

Drake : Your timing couldn't be better! It's become a ground war, and neither
Eagle nor I are any good at that.

Eagle : Knock it off, Drake! She delayed returning until she knew she'd be
met with fanfare, that's all!

Jess : What are you talking about?

Drake : Stow it, Eagle.

Eagle : The enemy took us by surprise, nothing more. I can liberate Green
Earth on my own, without you underfoot, Red!

Drake : Jess, don't mind him. He's angry is all.

Jess : I'm not worried about him. I was just thinking that the more things
change...

Drake : You know, with Eagle in the skies, me at sea, and you on the ground,
we're nigh invincible! Let's get our country back!

What if Jake was a bad impression of Will Smith from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Rachel was an even worse impression of Truman Capote becuase I am on the bourbon and I am having a great time.

Rachel: "Yep. We both enlisted about the same time, but my big s-- I mean,
Commander Nell's smarter than me, so she rose through the ranks fast. Luck had
something to do with it, too."

Jake: "Naw, you're razor sharp, Rachel. I guess I haven't been much of anywhere,
but I haven't met anyone smarter."

Rachel: "Ha! Take one step out of Omega Land, and you'll be tripping over COs
with way more skill than me! But listen, Jake, Omega land is in very real
danger. And we can't count on getting backup from Macro Land anytime soon. We
can't even be sure where all of our allied COs are now, either. You and me are
the only ones left to stop the enemy, Jake."

Jake: "Sounds like our backs are up against the wall."

Rachel: "All in all, you're taking this pretty well. You're not worried?"

Jake: "Naw. Well...yeah. Maybe a little. But with you rollin' beside me, I know
it's all good."

Rachel: "Don't even think I'm doing all the work. You're going to have to pull
your weight! It's time to start training. I'm warning you, though, I'm not going
to go easy on you."

Jake: "What?! Oh, let me turn my music down. Yeah, cool... I'm listening."

Dear Christ.

I started listening at work and fudge lost it when Sami started talking.

Had to turn it off. My manager was looking at me funny. Actually, everybody was.

ALL OF THEM.

Oh my god at Kilty.

In all seriousness, i think Kilty would do a good job of handling Flak and Adder, even if he was drinking, I think the accents he went with suit the characters just fine. Really, with Adder it was either british cockney or the typical gothic/vampiric voice, at least we would be doing something a little different.

Sucks they're not in the Dual Strike campaign. They show up PLENTY in AW2 though, so Kilty will surely get some work done.
