AW Fate: The Game (Part 1: Blue Moon Defense)

Postby Pkdragon » Wed Aug 05, 2015 6:59 am

SITUATIONAL ASPECTS:
- Cold As fudge
- Stuck in BH-Occupied Blue Moon Territory
- Low Fuel and Ammo
- Recon is broken

It's cold.

That's what most of you are thinking. Well, the soldiers of Blue Moon are somewhat used to this, but just because they are used to the climate doesn't change the fact that it's really cold. Colder than usual for this time of year. The snow hasn't yet fallen- Olaf must not be in charge of this battle- but frost lines the trees in this early morning.

You are what is left of the 23rd unit of the Blue Moon Combined Forces. The group is predominantly made up of Blue Moon soldiers, but with quite a few men of the other nations mixed in. You advanced too far, too quickly, and a surprise attack by Black Hole soldiers cut off your retreat path. There were casualties. You are the survivors. Too few- a couple squads of infantry, a mech unit, a recon team. About 25 men in total, not counting yourselves. And the Recon has broken down. It wouldn't have lasted long, anyway- it's wheels weren't meant for this overland travel, and it's been using up a lot of gas to compensate. Still, it's the only vehicle you have right now.

Ammo is fairly scarce as well- you won't last very long if you don't figure out a way to fix that. There's a small town with a supply depot to the west, you know that much. But it's occupied by Black Hole, and won't be easy to take. Maybe there's another way? Maybe not.

You've camped in a rocky valley, and it's served you well, hiding your signs from the black hole troops that occupy this land, for at least one night. But the day has dawned, and the camp

- - -

The mission went wrong. It should have been easy, at least the first part. While the battle was going on and the black hole troops were distracted, during the deepest fog of war, you flew behind enemy lines in a transport copter. It didn't work. The copter was hit with anti-air fire- it was a miracle enough of it survived to crash into the ground. Unfortunately, not all of your squad made it out, and the infantry squad that ambushed your unit afterwards also took their toll. As far as you know, you, Bittman the Great, are the only survivor. Well, you and the T-copter pilot, Summer, whose survival thus far has been something of a miracle.

Your mission is simple- there is a Black Hole base, approximately 10 miles to the north. The mysterious commander of the Blue Moon invasion Black Hole forces is stationed there. At the very least, you are expected to discover his or her identity. And then, should the opportunity arise, you are to eliminate the commander. You are one man (and one woman). Can you handle it?

Right now, however, you have another problem. In the valley below you, you have found a squad of allied troops. They look beaten up and low on morale. They shouldn't be here. Will you help them... or use them?

Of course, you're Bittman the Great. We know what your answer will be.

- - -

Vasil, you've heard rumors of a squad of blue moon soldiers that the black hole army has managed to lose. You have been sent by the rebellion to find them, meet up with them, and secure their aid. With your superior knowledge of the local surroundings, you quickly figure out that if they are still alive, they are probably in this rocky, semi-mountainous region of Blue Moon- otherwise they would have been found already. You're not sure exactly where, however. Good luck.

(( Ok, so feel free to introduce yourselves. I tried to leave things vague so that you can introduce your characters however you want... within the scope of the situation. This

You can make skill checks right now, if you want. Some obvious ones:

- Make a Repair check to try to fix the recon.
- Make a Rapport check to attempt to improve morale.
- Make a Notice check to notice Bittman and Summer.
- Make Lore checks to learn about the area (“roll” this and I'll make a post telling you what you know)
- Vasil making a Notice Check to try to find evidence of the squad. Or something like that.

If you have ideas on other skill checks you want to roll, feel free to ask me... or just roll them and see what happens!

An example of how to make a skill check:
I roll Repair to fix the Recon: +3 Roll, +4 Skill, +2 Stunt = +9 total

then you wait for me to tell you what happens and you roll with it. Posts don't need to be long, especially if they involve skill checks.

In general, the skill check should be the last thing you post. Because I need to confirm if you make it before you post the results. Bolding it is appreciated. Using the Cards to represent your roll is optional but amusing.

Anyway, If it isn't obvious, the goal of this part of the game is simply for everyone to meet each other. So everyone meet up and introduce yourselves.
)

AND HERE ARE YOUR CARDS

Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

You each get 1 set of these to use on skill checks and whatever else I tell you to use them on. I'd like you to keep track of them yourself if possible.

Ok. So, if there's any single post that you guys should copy and paste into a notepad or something, it's this one. Not the whole thing. The bit that applies to you. I mean, I'll keep track of it, but I'm notoriously bad at messing up details and missing things. So you should keep track when you take damage (hopefully will be relatively rare) or when you spend and gain FATE points (hopefully not so rare!) Consequences... well, We'll get to what those are when they come up :D

Vasil glided like a phantom through the forest on his pair of trusty skis. Silent and stealthy. His smooth motion unhindered by the heavy snow.

He stopped at a ditch and looked down at the snow glimmering in the morning light and saw what looked like some interesting tracks.

"Hmm... perhaps these markings will lead me to the remnant forces."

Without even looking at his map, he took off again.

Roll 3 for Notice.

Bittman the Great does not give up. He does not retreat. He does not surrender. It would not be the first time he had been abandoned behind enemy lines to his fate, nor would it be the last.

Such minor setbacks were inconsequential to his mission. As fellow soldiers, the allied troops below had their duties - and Bittman had his. He would fulfill those duties to his dying breath. For that was the meaning of honor.

"Onwards Summer, we must complete our mission. To victory!"

Begin moving north on foot.

"It was supposed to be a simple mission, they said." Fly a T-copter to a key position behind enemy lines, drop off the special forces, then get out, they said. As soon as they lost radio contact with the main force, things went wrong. "Someone at intel must've messed up big time." A flurry of anti-air fire greeted their transport when the area was said to be clear. Summer was trying to make small talk but there was no response from her stalwart companion aside from a terse "Hmm." or nod, to her knowledge the only other survivor from the crash and ensuing firefight which he near single-handedly repelled. He seemed lost in thought, like weighing the options. Summer made ineffectual attempts to liven up the situation. "You're Bittman, right? The Great? Captain or something?" He nodded. "Corporal Summer. I guess we'll be working together a lot longer than expected, huh?" She rummaged through the remnants of the commando unit and collected some gear. "We shouldn't stay in one place. Damn, it's cold."

The two were higher up in a valley. Out of the corner of her eye, Summer noticed activity further below. They made no noise but could be described as hushed, quiet, more allies separated from the main army? "Hey, Captain, or whatever, I see some possible friendlies down there." He looked and squinted but seemed to have trouble finding them. "Ah, spotter's eye. Anyway, we could rendezvous with them, discreetly of course. Well?" He thought briefly but shook his head, saying "Onwards Summer, we must complete our mission! To victory!" Summer's hearing was not as sharp, "Yeah, good idea- wait, what?" The Green Earth commando seemed intent on pushing into enemy territory- by himself if needed.

"Now- hold on a minute. Those soldiers, if they're friendly, might need help- or- or- they might be able to help yo- us! I know you're one of commander Javier's guys, but don't you think we should regroup? Or, maybe I can fetch them and you can scout ahead. Or charge ahead if that suits you. Maybe we'll all stand a better chance if we can find some place to bunker down. Some place warm, I hope."

((Just for clarification, is this:

"Notice medkits and other supplies (roll 3 + Notice 4)"

meant to check medkits and supplies in the allied camp? ))

((As far as Difficulty goes: I'm not going to tell you the difficulty by default, mostly because, well, quite frankly, if I told you, it would just me a matter of addition and subtraction to get the right number. THAT SAID, this is a good image to look at for interpreting your results:

Image

Easy tasks can likely be completed with Fair or maybe even Average results, Normal tasks could be completed with Good or Great results, Hard tasks would likely require Great or even Superb results or higher. And if you're attempting something crazy difficult, you'll need to be legendary to make it go as planned.

That said, I also will be handing out partial successes. For example, repairing the recon without the right supplies is a tough task, even for a supercomputer. But a result of 3, while not quite as good as I would want for a full repair job, gets it up and running enough to go a little ways further. (EDIT:...oh wait it's a result of 2. that changes things. STILL, if he had rolled a 3 instead of a 2, it would be a good example lmao.)

I'm usually not going to explicitly say whether a task is easy, normal, hard, etc, because again, want to keep things having some degree of uncertainty. The situation can make easy checks harder, harder checks easier, etc. Another tip is to look at those Situational Aspects I post, those are things that might very well affect the difficulty of checks.

@ Teddy: Under the circumstances, getting the damn thing fixed up would have been difficult. I mean, You probably could have done it, because this is the sort of task you normally excel at. But the soldiers watching you keep getting in your way, bumping you, and this particular recon is an older model, lacking certain standardized features that you were programmed to assume recons had. But hey, at least you didn't break it! (Failure)

@ Vasil: You picked up some fresh tracks in the wet dirt. Oh yes you did. But they aren't the tracks you were looking for... you think. You were looking for a much larger group, but these seem to be the tracks of two individuals. Black Hole squads usually have at least 5 men, so two individuals out here is strange, under the circumstances. The tracks lead further into the hills... (Semi-Success)

Just two men. Bit small for a squad, Vasil thought to himself. Could be someone trying to sneak behind enemy lines. A sniper team, perhaps.

Or it could be what is left from a larger group. Or just deserters. In any case, I must investigate further. They might lead me to what I'm looking for.

The snow seems to be getting thinner in this area. I'll have to pack my skis and continue on foot.

Vasil follows the tracks, while looking out for an ambush and trying to stay stealthy. His goal is to find whoever made the tracks and be the first to notice the other party.

@ DP: Boris is in the group, HPD just hasn't posted yet. It's fine though, we need to resolve the situation with Boris, Summer, and Vasil before moving on.

lol Narts, it looks as good of a representative of Fate Points as any. ))

Summer: You notice that these allies don't seem to have any obvious medkits and are short on supply in general. Maybe they're hiding them somewhere, but from the looks of the group, they could use some help. (Success)

You also notice a support drone in the ally camp, finishing up it's attempt to work on the group's lone recon. These drones are a relatively new Black Hole technology, it's surprising to see one here.

Also, both Summer and Bittman- roll one more Notice in your next posts.
These will be used against Vasil's Stealth check, the higher one wins. Alternatively, Summer can use the same notice she was going to use in response to Bittman's for this one, I don't care.

Bunkering down and avoiding the mission was completely out of the question. Bittman would not, could not tolerate such a tepid response to the situation. Better to die in a blaze of glory than to grow old a coward.

"Allow me to tip my hand - I have full intention of completing the original mission. Alone if need be. No matter what hardships may come, I Bittman, will not be broken."

He paused afterwards, staring off towards the point Summer had pointed out.

"Summer, you have won a great many victories on the strength of your own skill, no? You long, as does Bittman, for the aid of companions. But we cannot succumb to such weakness. We must trust in them to complete their mission as surely as we trust in ourselves to complete ours. So now I ask you, will you follow me into the belly of the beast?"

Summer turned around with a startle. She had thought she was good at this spotting thing!

A man in civilian clothes emerged from behind the trees, carrying a full backpack and a pair of skis on his back and an assault rifle slung over the shoulder. He looked like he had been out in the wilderness for some time. A paramilitary? At least he didn't seem hostile.

He raised his arm in greeting. "Ahoy there, you two. Don't shoot! I am a friend." The man had a strong Blue Moon accent.

He saw the markings on Bittman's uniform and addressed him first. "Good morning, Captain." He tipped his flat cap. "Ma'am."

"My name is Vasil. I represent the People's Liberation Army. We are a stalwart group of armed men who have been holding out against the Black Hole occupation in this region since it began. But we lack weapons, training and equipment. We heard the Allied Nations might have finally recognised the war situation and sent an international army group to aid us in our struggle. I take it you two are with this force? An advance scout? I see no sign of the rest of your unit. What happened?"

[empathy is used for healing probably!]
=====================================

Bittman had appealed to Summer's sense of pride as a soldier. Right now though, her sense of survival had firmly overtaken it. Of course, she knew there was little point in trying to dissuade a member of the Green Earth commandos. "I don't mean to speak out of rank sir, but we don't even know what mission those soldiers are on. They might even have the same goals as us! Which is, uh, to take the enemy base. With a full squad of soldiers. Not one soldier and a half. Err, not that I doubt your capabilities! You're as good as a squad yourself! So, uh, what I mean to say is, we had enough man power for two squads and now we're down to one." Bittman was unamused.

Before he could deliver a retort about glory and honor, the two were approached by a stranger, though non-hostile, who announced himself as local militia. Bittman was probably preparing a grand salutation about meeting a fellow man at arms so Summer spoke first. "Morning, capn'. You're right, we're with the AN." She considered talking about their mission but thought better of it if only because she didn't know all the details. "We're here to help kick Black Hole's behind out of the area but, uh, I guess you could say we're a little lost."

Medic is an interesting idea. I tried to adapt FATE's skillset to AW best I could, but I obviously missed a few things.

So yes, I'll add Medical to the list of skills, and because I'm nice, if anyone wants to switch out a skill they haven't used yet at this point for it, they may.

HPD, that's fine. I woke up stupidly late today and as such have been behind, and I've got a busy day tomorrow. So I'm not progressing the game at all in before the weekend's over, most likely. Try to read and make a post this weekend if you can, though.

=====

The grizzly Green Earth soldier furrowed his stalwart brows, mulling over the options but clearly favoring a direct attack on the enemy base or something equally valiant and suicidal. Summer imagined he would deliver a rousing speech about how no number of enemy was too great, no situation so dire, and no mission should be put off. She really hoped this Vasil fellow could *command* his stubborn attitude.

"Greetings, Vasil. I am Bittman, the captain of this unit, and the lady is Summer, our pilot. Alas, the rest of our unit has fallen in a most cowardly ambush, we are commandos on a particular mission. Perhaps the unit you speak of is the one my pilot informed me of earlier."

Bittman stared at Vasil. While the mission was urgent, it would be a black mark upon his honor if he did not help a fellow warrior in such dire straits.

"A change of immediate plans, Summer. We would be remiss in our duty as soldiers if we did not aid Vasil in his time of great need. We will escort him to the allied unit we saw earlier before continuing our mission."

"That would be very honourable of you, Bittman. Hopefully I will need not inconvenience you for too long. Your mission must surely be important and urgent, however I believe that establishing contact between the AN troops and my people will be critical towards the success of your ultimate objective, in the esteemed lady's words," Vasil tips his cap again, "to kick Black Hole's behinds."

=============

"You might've noticed, Vasil, but there's another group of Allied personnel nearby." Summer pointed in their direction. "They're lower in the valley. Might be a good idea to regroup with them, strength in numbers and all that." The others agreed. Bittman amazingly seemed less disappointed about not immediately storming the enemy stronghold than Summer expected. "By the way, I'm a spotter before anything else. I'd like to think I can hold out in a firefight but let's try to stick with what we're good at. So! I can scout ahead if you want. Used to go hiking back in Orange Star. But you know the area, and it's never this cold there, if you want to lead the way."

============
party!
Summer: 3/3/3 healthy, used rolls 3, 4, 5, 6
Bittman: 3/4/3 healthy, used roll 1
Vasil: 3/4/3 healthy, used rolls 3, 4, 5

actions!
move to allied group
look for enemy ambush or other activity (roll 6 + Notice 4)
get a feel for the area (roll 5 + Lore 0)

In hindsight, having a battle before we all met up in the metaphorical tavern would have been a bit much.

"Wery well. You look like you have a sharper eye than me. It doesn't seem a long march and there's only three of us, but it wouldn't hurt to pick a formation. Captain here is the team leader so it's up to him, but I would suggest a file, with Summer at the point, the TL in the middle and myself as the radio man in the rear."

"This sounds most reasonable. Though Vasil, I would recommend you stay in the center so that you are more easily defended if fighting breaks out."

ROLLS (one we go in either formation):

NOTICE 3 + 1 for enemies trying to ambush us from behind.
STEALTH 2 + 0 for trying to be stealthy while going towards the destination.

Vasil does not argue against that reasoning. He goes in the middle.

Roll 6 (+0) Skill (+3) for Stealth.
Roll 2 (-2) Skill (+3) For Notice.

Would Notice not detect enemies before they engage the characters? Or would it depend on the Notice value used by the player versus the severity of the check?

Notice absolutely would detect enemies before they engage you... if you managed to beat their Stealth checks. (Incidentally, enemies will be drawing from a shared card pool for any checks they make, and I will usually be randomizing which card they pick... unless you are fighting particularly competent enemies. )

Anyway, still waiting on HPD. If he hasn't posted by tomorrow, I'll move the story forward.

Oh dear, does this mean our tutorial fight might wipe the party if they randomly pick the 10?

More seriously, I propose Boris and any late-comers be found at the nearby settlement. They would not have to worry about what already happened and just focus on getting in the game. Maybe they arrived there on their own after also being separated from the main force or are reinforcements or something.

You would need to expend a Fate Point to propose such a thing I believe...

I will happily spend a point to bring in another player or two.

Will you allow me to spend a FATE point to be found in the village/settlement?

Yeah, I can agree on that. If that costs me a fate point, sure.

@ ML: It's not too late to start your character off in the allied camp, but sure, if you want to that's fine.

Also, while Narts is correct, normally such things would cost a FATE point but I'll make an exception because this is less about game narrative and more about getting all the players introduced and together. That extends to ML and HPD as well.

As far as combat goes, if they randomly rolled a 10? It wouldn't wipe the party, it would just increase the likelihood of me explaining Consequences sooner :D
