CCO Tourney: Final Round

Post by NovaCid9 » Tue Apr 25, 2006 9:30 am

Yes, that's right folks. Thanks to the somewhat odd setup of the tournament, the final round of the tourney is now upon us. After two weeks of feirce competition, the best of the best have risen up, and are now ready to duke it out for the title of CCO champion. As of right now, the winner wil get...absolutely nothing. I think the prestige is it's own reward. And if you don't agree, have DC make you a spiffy sig or something along those lines. Anyway, this round will end in exactly one week, at around this time, so you have plenty of time to think. And here are the CO's...

Hailing from the frosty nation of Blue Moon, we have the heir apparent to Olaf's commandership, CO Alexander. He had quite the first round, taking out Armand, who many(and by many I mean myself) who picked to win this tournament. His second round was far less even, and Alexander enters this round with the largest margin of victory.

Next, from the mighty Orange Star, we have the somewhat freakish science experiment CO, Duke. He beat my CO Grey in the first round with a final score of, if memory serves me correctly, 2 to 1. His second round battle also recieved remarkably few votes. Let's hope this trend doesn't carry over to the finals.

And finally, also making his way from the motherland, Blue Moon, we have the inexperienced and indecisive CO, Ivan. In my opinion, and no offense ment to FGM, he is the black horse of this match, as he faced two amazing COs last round, in HPD's Zed and Tronn Bonne's Ember, and still managed to pull off a victory. Let's see if Blue Moon's raw recruit can make it all the way. Let the battle begin....

CO Alexander Version-1.2
Full Name: Alexander Kruchin
Blue Moon
Age: 19

Bio: Widely considered Blue Moon’s most promising future leader yet, Alexander is regarded highly by the nation’s current leader and dictator, Olaf. Though he is indeed in training for politics rather than war, he’s spurred on by Olaf to continue his schooling as a commanding officer for when he takes the reigns as head of the nation.

Taught by his father people pleasing techniques to maintain power, Alexander chose to take this a couple steps further right on the political spectrum, adopting caring for the proletariat at the top of his politcal agenda. Despite his father's incesstant influence and war-monger-like personality, Alexander grew up with a natural aversion to war and maintained an open and tolerant mind towards people of all walks of life. However, he could not deny his father's persuasive personality for long, and he was forced to take up military strategy and tactics in addition to his schooling. Thinking that's all he would have to do with current military skirmishes, Alex was much relieved until his father put him in charge of Blue Moon defenses during the second great war. This burden came as a shock, and Alex refused vehemently; he hated war, and especially the way it left a country and its people in shambles.

'Alex my boy, now's your chance to change all that. Show the people that you're doing your best for them and that you care for them; that is, unless you want me to put a commander in charge that doesn't care as much about our citizens as you?'

Hearing this from Olaf was too much, and Alexander gave in, though rather sulkily. However, his father wouldn't have just left the country in the hands of a young, inexperienced boy, and he subsequently left Sasha -daughter of the richest family in Blue Moon- in charge of his training. They bore through the first few obligatory awkward moments, and soon became fast friends. He even discovered why Sasha, so ladylike and reserved in appearence, chose to take such a career path despite her obvious dislike for aggressive manuevers.

'It's simple really; you don't get far relying on other people to make decisions and choices for you in something you feel strongly about, and I chose to be a part of war rather than distance myself from it.'

This simple statement struck Alex, and he knew that she was right. Why hide from what you hate and hope it will go away on it's own? He would try and change the face of war, to eliminate it comepletely and improve the lives of his citizens, by being a part of it and in control of it. It was so obvious, yet he never realized it until now. Though Alexander knew he'd never get used to military conflict, he knew he'd at least be making a difference. He continued his training, and he and Sasha easily defeated the last remnants of Black Hole within Blue Moon.

When his father got back from defeating Sturm, Olaf found himself greeted by a more mature and intelligent son who was ready to change the world. Alex continued to work with Sasha, though this time by through negotiations and the forming of treaties with Orange Star, Blue Moon, and Green Earth to keep the peace and prevent another conflict from breaking out. Through these agreements, they managed to get the other nations to acquiesce to a final treaty and form the alliance of the Allied Nations to hopefully deter any further threats from Black Hole. This was their final triumph, and was the glue that held the nations together during the Macro Land Wars.

Despite this, Alex and Sasha never forged a romantic relationship through unspoken agreement. However, they're continually encouraged by their parents to some day be wedded, as both groups have something to gain. Olaf, money for his campaigns and rallies, Sasha's father, for the unlimited political influence. So far, their plans have not come to fruition.

Alex's care for the people and peace have become apparent to all of Blue Moon, and the citizens eagerly await the day that he may lead them.

Description: Alexander is a young man with sharp features and a handsome face. He has vivid blue eyes, and dark brown hair slightly longer than typically seen. He wears a black tuxedo, with black pants and a white shirt underneath. The coat is undone, and it’s distinctly obvious he’s not wearing a tie. He is of medium build and average height.

Skills: All units are 100/100 day-to-day due to his lack of interest in war.

:power:Peace Riots: Alexander impresses upon people of all nations the obvious pointlessness of war through all means at his disposal. As a result the people hold riots and demonstrations, causing all current captures to be dismissed. All enemy captures are halted and facilities are set back to default Hp. Additionally, thanks to his popularity with the people, he receives a 1.5* capture modifier. Default +0/10 bonus.
“Comrades, I beg of you to see from my eyes…”
“There is more to war than simply bullets and explosions.”

:super:Inevitable Revolution: Alexander convinces the people to free themselves of the shackles of exploitation and join in his cause, spurring mayhem and disruption. All enemies receive no funding next turn. Additionally, the people hand over what resources they can to Alexander’s control; he receives 3/4 of current enemy funds at the time of activation [this part of the SCOP is merely to ensure the enemy remains at low funding next turn and will usually result in little impact]. Default +0/10 bonus.
“Express yourselves, my dear people, through action rather than words!”
“Now we shall see where their sympathies really belong.”

Victory Quotes
“Ironically, your shortcomings stemmed from within your own ranks.”
“Ah, I see now! This is why the citizens were on my side all along.”

Description:

Doctor’s Report dated October 4th, 2005.

Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 120 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Gray, formerly Brown
Blood Pressure: 100/60

I have concluded my physical examination of commanding officer Duke. Physically, Duke is a complete mess. The man has been through a traumatizing experience, evident by his suddenly gray hair. He suffered from malnutrition and dehydration; the effects are still obvious on his worn body. Duke is dangerously thin. His wiry frame barely supports his weight. His wiry arms bear the wounds of battle. They also bear many injections, though tests cannot determine what Black Hole has done. I imagine it will take months for his body to recover from the ordeal, but it must be noted that he has been eating normal portions since his recovery from the Black Hole encampment. His taut face has clearly suffered the brunt of the torture. There are heavy bags under Duke’s eyes; he has been sleeping, but it does not seem to have done his body much good. It will take more than rest to heal his body. It will take a complete rejuvenation of his body and mind. I have recommended that a psychiatrist be summoned to help his ravaged mind.

He complains of constant headaches. I have prescribed medicine to treat it, but I doubt it will do him much good. I can only ease his pain, not cure it.

I conclude this report with a heavy heart. I don’t know why, but looking into Duke’s eyes drains the very life out of me.

Personality:

Psychiatrist’s Report dated October 4th, 2005.

Duke is relatively well-adjusted considering his traumatic experience in the Black Hole compound. He harbors a dislike for scientists and is angry at Black Hole, which is expected after his ordeal. Talking to him is rather difficult; I have an overwhelming sadness engulfing me, but I can manage.

Duke has explained to me the extent of his newfound ability. In short, he can drain the will to fight out of enemy soldiers. Duke does so by poisoning their minds with sadness, which lowers their morale and their effectiveness in combat.

However, Duke cannot control this ability yet. As such, communicating with people is difficult. This explains my feelings of sadness earlier. Instead of rejecting this ability, Duke has embraced it instead. It distinguishes him from the other commanding officers, though it is difficult to control his battalion. He figures that he will be able to return to form in due time. In order to deal with this ability, Duke has developed a combat personality to accompany his normal personality.

Normally, Duke is a modest commanding officer who defers praise to his subordinates. He respects and adores his superiors and is mindful of his manners. He abides by a code of chivalry, defending and deferring to women as often as possible, often to the annoyance of Sami. In battle, however, Duke becomes a proud warrior, ready to utilize the ability Black Hole has given him. He is cautious, but is not above belittling the foe relentlessly. It may be Duke’s way of dealing with his “aura of sorrow,” as he describes it, but it is a stark contrast to his off-the-field persona. I do not know if this second personality will lead to a development of even more personalities. For his sake, I hope this will not be the case.

History:

Duke was a proud and influential commanding officer and leader in Orange Star during the first war against Black Hole. His very presence was said to drive his forces into fighting with more ferocity.

Sometime after Sturm was defeated by the four allied countries, Duke was kidnapped by Black Hole agents. Sturm had taken interest in his commanding ability and knew the difficulty of fighting motivated troops. He sought to demolish the morale of his enemies, and Duke would be the perfect commanding officer to experiment on. Sturm and his scientists attempted to destroy Duke’s commanding ability, but were mostly unsuccessful. Their multiple experiments wore away Duke’s resolve, reducing him to a pathetic state. Sturm believed Duke’s leadership skills were still intact, and ended the experiment, leaving him to waste away in the jail.

However, Sturm did not realize that his experiments changed Duke’s ability to motivate his troops in a terribly different manner.

When the second war broke out, Duke took advantage of the lull in security and escaped the Black Hole compound. He returned to Orange Star, where he was immediately captured and detained.

Duke was now a shell of his former self, but his leadership capabilities still remained to a degree. His subordinates recognized him, freeing him from Orange Star’s detention center. Burning with vengeance, Duke’s former soldiers petitioned that he be reinstated. Nell consented, allowing Duke to command his old battalion.

However, the effects of Black Hole’s experiments had taken its toll. Duke was no longer able to motivate his forces as he once had. His very appearance drained the morale of his troops. It seemed that he would become an ineffective commanding officer, until one day, he engaged the enemy for the first time since his capture. When he took the field, the opponent’s forces gazed upon him for a moment, and then began to retreat. The units who remained were quickly routed by the allied forces. Duke realized what Black Hole had done to him. Their experiments bestowed him the ability to sap the morale of his opponents, but also struck fear into his own battalion.

Duke has vowed to pursue Black Hole until they are completely annihilated. In time, Duke hopes to make a compete recovery, but he has also accepted that it may never happen.

Name: Ivan

Army: Blue Moon

Creative Section:

Description: Ivan is a new recruit to the Blue Moon army, he is young, about 16 years old. Ivan is 5 foot 7 (170.2 cm) and 132 pounds (60 kg). He has scruffy, blonde hair and bright, blue eyes and wears a white t-shirt and blue jeans with white socks and black running shoes. Ivan is relatively shy, being new and all, but he has a natural talent for commanding an army. Ivan is also very unsure of the future and he can not decide which type of combat he wants to specialize in. Being part of Blue Moon, he feels a direct comabt specialist would be best for Blue Moon has no direct specialist. However after watching Grit in combat he continues to have inner conflict. His fellow Commanding Officers try to help him decide but no matter what, they respect his choices, and in return, Ivan respects his fellow Commanding Officers. Ivan was a member of the same military academy as Colin and both graduated to the Blue Moon army. Colin sometimes gets angry at Ivan because of Ivan's crush on Sasha which often gets him into trouble. Howver, Ivan and Colin are the best of friends and the best of rivals.

History: Ivan was born in the same hometown as Olaf and they share a special bond because of this. As an attendee of the Blue Moon military academy, Ivan discovered he had natural talent for warfare, however he often had trouble making quick decisions and too this day, he retains this quality. Although he has the same experience as Colin, his natural skill in warfare allows armies under his command to be more effective, thus balancing his lack of true experience. During the second Wars World War, Ivan denied himself battle experience due to his lack of confidence. However, having the same hometown as Olaf, Ivan also harbors a deep resentment for Black Hole. To this day, he spends his time with Olaf, rebuilding their home and defending his country.

Duke removes OHKOS from both players and generally encourages a slow game.

Ivan is stuck with only one power, and being incredibly predictable if he wants to make the most use of his game.

Alex has THE capture power. There's a COP I'd like to use.

Vote for Alex.

I vote Alexander. Duke's creative section is amazing, but his abilities are somewhat unoriginal. And while I can see how Ivan could be very useful, he could also be somewhat ineffective. Most maps clearly favor either direct or indirect combat, which means that more often than not you're going to be stuck with only one truly effective power, that is in actuallity somewhat overcosted. I'm not saying Ivan is useless, just that in many situations, he's going to end up limited. Alexander has a very good creative section, and his powers seem very effective.

For this round, I'm just voting for the CCO I like the most, disregarding balance or anything.

And I have to say my vote goes to Alexander. This because of the fact that Duke brings really nothing new to the game and would make a bit of an obsolete CO if he were added. Ivan, while interesting strategically, also relies on a concept as old as CCO creating itself. Alexander is somewhat interesting, though, and Treed did quite an awesome job of making a good capture/funds CO without messing much with traditional game mechanics. He's by far not the best CCO concept I've seen, but he's the most interesting one out of these three.

All three CCOs are well designed but I feel that Duke is merely a simple play on programming and, despite the well written bio, is actually rather bland. This means that it is really a choice between Alexander and Ivan. Now Ivan is basically a Grit/Max combo but the idea of having a CCO with essentially two COPs is different. Meanwhile, Alexander is very unique with his skills and has a very strong bio. Yet Treedweller did receive a lot of assistance when making Alexander what he is today while FGM had considerably less help with balancing/tweaking Ivan. Thus, I can't help but to vote for Ivan when I take that into account :? Still, Alexander is an excellent CCO treedweller.

I'll vote for Duke purely because of his creative section. I can't decide based on the actual abilities and stats because of their large differences. Ivan has two COPs and no SCOP, Duke has good thematic powers but are a little boring, and Alexander has good interesting powers overall. Duke gets my vote.

GG FGM and DTae, you both crafted amazing CCOs that undoubtedly deserved to make it this far and win. And thanks Nova; this was quite a fun little distraction

That final round was awesome. Contests in which the winner is never clear till the end just rock. Congrats, FGM, for winning, and to treed and DTaeK for worthy CCOs. And Cid, you managed this little tourney quite well.
