Soliciting Maps for a War Room Hack 2.0

Post by Xenesis » Sat Jan 09, 2010 5:18 pm

I'm sure you guys have all seen the Fist Peninsula Hack or Played the original War Room Hack.

I thought I'd put together another one. I need suggestions on maps to use :)

Restrictions: I have 30 maps I can put in. I'm not faffing around with AI pointers so a limit to the number of air and air/sea maps is related to how many are already in the War Room case.
Putting together maps and predeployed unit lists in the current XML format by hand takes a while. If you do it yourself it'll be more likely to be included. You can find some examples here. This tilemap is a good reference and is in tile order. Otherwise I'll be putting them in..but it may take a while that way :o
I'm avoiding the use of Black Hole inventions because honestly, they suck.
Megamissiles or Black Fortresses CAN be used.
You can place fired silo tiles without issue.
Completely predeployed maps will work fine.
Tighter is better for speed limits.

As a final FYI, I'm gone for the next two weeks (likely without internet) so there'll be no thread responses until I get back. Then I will get stuck into it.

These were the War Room maps I was going to include in the Ember Hack but never got round to doing it. Looking though the AWN, WWN, CW and AWB websites, these were the maps I liked the look of. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of the creators names (DOH >_<), so if you do use any of them, you and I will have to track down the creators name (fun...).

Well the image said "whily0dp", so I thought it meant "Whirlpool". Anyway, I've updated the name and the creator. HAPPY NOW SVEN?

Radioshadow you should really look up the authorship before posting them about. Also, a lot of them, while rated highly on the DM, may not function well as actual war rooms in game.

For your information, anyways,
Brother Isles -- Roma Emu
Foulacy -- Darkrush
Hopeful Island -- Donnyton
Snowy Road -- Donnyton

Those are as far as I remember. The other ones look familiar too and I could probably get the authors if you do choose them for the final set.

However, all of those would have to be replaytested with the balance hack to get accurate perfect speed requirements.

With balance hack Sami is nerfed to hell what should push up the speed limit quite a bit.
My sig is a void.

And here are some of my personal maps for submission:

Audacious Islands
Enemies: Olaf (BM) and Drake (GE)
Perfect Speed: Unknown

Image

Marshes of Despair
Enemies: Sturm (BH)
Perfect Speed: Unknown

Image

Spackle Range
Enemies: Grit (BM)
Perfect Speed: 14 days?

Image

Crescent Brothers
Enemies: Sami (BM)
Perfect Speed: Unknown

Image

The Long Run
Enemies: Adder (BM)
Perfect Speed: Unknown

Image

Obviously, I'll need help playtesting these with balance hack in place. DTaeKim and Dragon Fogel, care to try at any of them?

Marshes of Despair looks like things could get a bit crowded. The rest of the maps look cool, donnyton.

I wouldn't worry about the Perfect Speed let, as we need to ask Xen if he is using the balance hack. Plus they can easily be changed any time.

I've also just finished making amends to the AW2 Map Inserter and Extractor. Also just got to compile the AW2 Map Header Editor which should make a few things easier. Hope to upload them soon.

The xml files will need to look something like below. I'll put together a guide on how to do that some when this week. The only thing I need to look into are the AI Unit options. By default, they are set to "Always Active".

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<awMap version="1.3" xmlns="urn:awmaps-schema">

I have all the files needed and I can reproduce the maps, I just need some skilled WR players to test them because I rarely try to push the completion time past the 100 limit.

Thumbs down to most of the maps.

1. Woods vomit
2. Too large. >400 square tiles = n00b. Marshes of Despair gets a specific mention for ultra-failure. Do you seriously think the AI can path a decent capture phase in that jumble?
3. Equal properties? Yeah, sure, it's been already proven that the AI can lose even with a 24-4 property advantage using broken COs. Any custom war room should be several degrees more difficult than what's normally expected.

As seen in AW1, the AI is at its best when it has a bunch of predeployed units. However, most of the war room has both sides with no units to start, so I guess it should stay that way.

For some reason, most of these maps have the same aesthetic as well.

Why not repurpose some DoR maps? It's not like IS was shy about reusing old maps over and over instead of coming up with new material. I tried Metro Map with all neutral properties being given to BM for starters and failed horribly. Perhaps giving them three medium tanks was overdoing it.

I started making a hack of all 30 maps back in summer of 2009.

Yeah, I got lazy that time, but now I want to actually finish!

Anyways. Gordo was made by Sarumarine of AWN who seems to have vanished without a trace. *Twilight Zone theme* I was going to use Gordo in my own hack, but I can give Xen the XML file if he wants it.

But enough rambling.

Image

This is a map made by yours truly and I really think it could use some changes to up the difficulty. I'm thinking a Missile and a Rocket in the HQ and pre-deployed Anti-Airs.

Image

Also made by me is a rather dull map. I won't mention its name because it needs a better one.

Thanks for all the contributions guys, but I will consider the maps that belong to the submitters first as otherwise I'm going to go have to sort out finding permission.

And as Gip says, Equal property maps probably won't make very good War Rooms, so I may tweak them.

Xen, I need to upload the "updated" AW2 Map Inserter / Extractor. Just has a few bugs fixed.

Also will be including this app I made to allow easy access in editing War Room map headers (Macs should be able to run VB 6.0 apps, right Xen?). I just got to make sure it's working correctly.

Also, are you using the balance hack?

Haven't decided yet. In light of recent developments I may even make it an AWDS hack, although that's a lot harder for everyone to play.
