Maps Without Guides (AW1)

Post by Dragon Fogel » Sun Nov 24, 2013 7:13 am

I was glancing over the guides largely on a whim today, and decided it would be good to make an actual list of what still needs to be done. Anyone can feel free to write up a guide they already have, or just post some notes you have lying around and I'll try to assemble them into a guide.

Some of these probably have guides lying around the forums somewhere. Hopefully having a list all in one place will help people to notice if they stumble across one while reading old threads or something.

I'm going to make threads on these for all the games and I'll keep them updated as guides come in, since I don't expect a huge flurry of activity here.

The goals for AW1 guides are:
-Strategies for 999 (which I presume is the actual score) on all Field Training maps
-Strategies for 999 on each Campaign map with all COs
-Strategies for an S-Rank, 999 where possible, on each Advance Campaign map with all COs
-Strategies for 999 on each War Room map with all COs

I don't know entirely how to handle The Final Battle! off the top of my head, but 12 possible combinations of COs isn't that bad if it turns out we need to cover each individually. The strategy is probably just going to boil down to "let Sturm take that airport in Andy's territory", anyhow, since that's by far the most effective tactic I know of for the map.

If a map has a strategy but only for one CO, or a general strategy but doesn't cover the exceptions, I'll list the names of COs who still need a guide.

Field Training

We have guides here, but I notice they don't have turn limits. Noting special message conditions (like clearing Base Capture by rout) would be good, too. The guides we have are generally bare-bones, but Field Training is simple enough, and already covered in detail on awrevival if someone really wants help with that A-Rank.

Mostly I'm putting this here to say "we should probably add in the Speed limits and special message conditions for completeness".

UPDATE: Turns out I never actually looked at the links! Only the first half of Field Training is written up.

Advance Campaign Maps
Turns out we don't have anything in this section at all.

-Battle Mystery! (Andy's version, Max's version, Sami's version)
-Andy Times Two!

War Room

-Spann Island (Kanbei)
-Sole Harbor
-Pivot Isle (Kanbei)
-Land's End
-Kita Straight
-Point Stormy
-Ridge Island (Kanbei)
-Bounty River
-Toil Ferry
-Dire Range
-Egg Islands
-Terra Maw
-Rivers Four
-Ring Islands

Sidenote: There are a few maps here where DTK gives a general strategy and makes a few minor notes about what Kanbei has to do differently, but doesn't go into detail about it. These maps are Duo Falls, Mial's Hope, Twin Isle, and Stamp Islands.

Just to get second opinions, I'd like to ask people to try the guides for those maps with Kanbei to make sure they're clear enough to follow. At some point I'll get to trying these out myself.

In fact, in general if you find a guide on the site hard to follow, pass that along.

So now that I've made the list, I'll note the things I plan to do in order to shorten in.

Right off the bat, I can see that the Land's End general strategy is falling to me, unless some of our speed freaks can work out how to pull off a capture by land without Sami.

I have a video of Ridge Island with Kanbei and could just write that up if nothing else.

Dire Range and Egg Islands are very easy and the guides would basically boil down to reliable ways to get the Power score. Ring Islands is going to be "rush both HQs and hope enough units are sent to your island".

Rivers Four's guide is likely going to be "savescum until every single one of Grit's units moves west and take his HQ with a single infantry".

Finally, I've been traumatized by Bounty River in this game, but I'll probably have to do it again anyways to write up a guide. At least I figured out some tricks in all my attempts... I'm probably going to have to use Kanbei again for completeness, though, and damn I'm not looking forward to that.

Why are we not replicating the strategies from sources like MJEmirzian's guide or the AW Revival site? Using those as a base and tweaking them where needed should save a lot of work. If possible, you might want to get in touch with them and ask for permission to use.

An excellent point, we've often directed people to those guides anyways. I'll send off some e-mails.

I'm not sure how contactable AW Revival will be, but MJEmirzian shouldn't be that hard to get in contact with.

Edit: Okay, I sent an e-mail to the address on AW Revival. I have no idea if it's still in use, but it's all I'm likely to find. I sent MJEmirzian a PM on GameFAQs, too.

All right, we've got MJEmirzian's permission. I'll start formatting the Campaign guides sometime today. If someone else with site access is looking for something to do, they can start working on the Hard Campaign guides.

Cool! That was surprisingly easy! Anyway, Xen should be able to hook you up on the WordPress thingy so you can format them on there. There's little sense in going through all the hassle of coding them into the old site when we're going to replace the whole thing sometime soon-ish.

E: basically that template is operational as it is. I think most of the work that needs to be done is either aesthetical or simply moving/reformatting old content.

Just got a response from AW Revival.

They said no to letting us use the guides, but they'd be fine with us linking to the site.

Fair enough. MJEmirzian's guides should cover most of AW1 though.

So nearly a year after I first posted this, I find that we don't have guides to Field Training Missions 8-14. We only have links to them that lead nowhere.

Updated the initial post with this information.

Yeah, I got bored of doing those after a while. Not that anybody needs guides for Field Training.
